Kickstarter lever points to the ground!

I turned right into a side street. When in second gear the kick start lever wound backwards and pointed to the ground. I decided to ride home in 2nd gear with the kick star down. It now is very difficult to kick over and turning the rear wheel with gearbox in neutral there is more resistance than normal. Any ideas?
I seem to remember a thread from years ago describing something similar, but can’t find it.

Sounds like a layshaft bearing.
Time to go through the trans.
DON't ride it.

Don't ride it anymore.
This is the classic symptom of a failed layshaft bearing (gearbox).
It has to be replaced.
Plenty of threads on here of how to do it.

Thanks for the replies . I can focus on that bearing when I get chance to pull the gearbox apart.
