Hello All

Before I pull the gearbox cover off, I thought it may be worth getting some smart advice on correct diagnosis and parts required for correction.

I have a '70 Commando which has been running and starting like a champ. Until

The last few times I've tried kickstarting, the kickstarter crank kicks through and turns the kickstart shaft however with increasing frequency, there is no resistance, only a click as the kickstarter crank is put through regular motion. Sometimes the beginning of the kickstart cycle starts with normal feel but midway through the kick it seems to slip, then clicks to the end of the kick travel. Other times it only clicks without seeming to "grab". I've double checked that the kickstart crank is not riding over the splines. The shaft is turning.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks!

The kickstart pawl probably needs replacing.

Thank you L.A.B.

Researching this a bit, thats what it seems. When replacing the kickstart pawl, would you normally replace other things, such as springs, bushings, etc. or if it is just the pawl replace just that?

Thanks again!

Yes, it would be an ideal time to check/change seals, springs, etc., but most importantly, to replace the layshaft drive-side bearing if it is a metal (steel or brass) cage ball bearing with the upgrade roller bearing or FAG 6203 TB ball bearing.
