kickstand for my 71

I used the new side stand mount from old Britts, the original lug had broken off. I did it with the bottom end still in the frame, top off for e re bore

I used a drill and a cut off wheel to remove the old side stand plate.

The shop layed it on its side and used a guage to set the correct angle and welded it in place.

Can be done engine in place but would be easier with it removed.

I had the upgraded kickstand mount welded to my 71 frame. I'm a crappy welder and am glad I paid a professional to do the work. I'm sure I would have blown a hole in my frame trying to weld that thick bracket to the thin wall of the tube frame. I'm still very gentle when resting the bike on it, lots of leverage with that long stand and I would never sit or let alone kick over the bike while resting on it.
- With the high compression of my 750 (combat head) I must use the center stand to start it or the suspension just absorbs too much of the kick. A stock 850, with it's low compression can be kicked-over without the stand from what I've seen.

Nice to see a response that actually addresses the question instead of 'lecture/advise'.
Lord knows we got way too many opinions on this site and it's a struggles sometimes to find real answers to simple questions.

Harsh :-)

He asked about a "kickstand"

I have been around bikes 46 years and I have never heard of a "kickstand" Seems its a US term and the guy replying was from Australia.

Saying kickstand impies you are going to start the bike on a stand. (Unless he meant kick start of course). Either way somewhat confusing to the 6.5 billion of us that dont live in North America ???

Starting a bike on a stand -sidestand or mainstand - is not a good idea.

The term "kickstand" is a common term (in the U.S. anyway) for a bicycle side stand or center stand.

So what do you call this bicycle device in NZ?

On a motorcycle - a sidestand.

On a bicycle - a stand? Not something that comes up in conversation so much :-)

So in summary:
It's a sidestand outside the US
Longer is better (Really sorry to hear that one)
There are bolt ons and weld ons but they both have issues
Both the factory sidestand and center stand were designed to fail if used while starting the bike
Real men don't use either

Got it!

One more question, is synthetic oil better than Dyno oil?
Just kidding. Didn't expect to trigger so much debate. Just want a kickstand for my 71 Commando.
Thanks all!

This is what I would like also.
In HD speak, its a jiffy stand.
