Kicker moving on its own

Took the gearbox on a 74 apart as the kicker was moving backward when running or when in neutral and turning the back wheel backwards. Nothing seemed obviously wrong but I did install a superblend roller on the layshaft and replaced a few bushes that seemed to have to much clearance. Just got the gearbox together again and it’s doing the same thing (k/s crank rotates backwards sometimes when the rear wheel is rotated in neutral). At this point, I suspect that the layshaft might be slightly bent causing interference with the inside of the k/s bushing, although how such a short shaft might get bent is a mystery to me. Or maybe the mainshaft is bent causing the layshaft to deflect, resulting in the same thing. At any rate, I think I’m going to have to tear it all apart again to find out what is going on. Help and suggestions all welcome.

After I installed a roller bearing the same thing happened. The shaft is not held tight to the drive side as it would be with an interference ball brg. and it can move. Shimming behind the kickstart with ISO shims helps sometimes but not on mine. After a closer look at the assembly and Old Britts gearbox pics to figure out what could be driving the kick start in 1st I found witness marks on the end of the kick start shaft and the gear dogs. It was clear where these project thru' the gear they were rubbing on the k/s shaft face. Now I can't remember exactly how I shimmed it but the trick was to move the 1st laygear (28t) nearer the timing side. That cured the problem but it took a lot of stripping and rebuilding before I figured it out. There may be other reasons but that was my problem and solution.

But rmullett's kickstart lever is moving in neutral not 1st so it couldn't really be the gear dogs catching the K/S shaft?

I would check if layshaft 1st gear boss or 1st gear bush were rubbing against the end of the layshaft bush?
