Ok so here is the last major hurdle. I converted the stock pipes to a two into one and now there is a clearance issue. I am uncertain but it appears that the Kick starter has been bent inwards. The foot rest on the starter also goes back about 20 degrees farther then it should. Is it possible to heat these up and bend them? Any thoughts I really would rather use my foot then push start the thing?

Here are a couple of pictures that should make it clear what the iussue is.

Kick Starter Clearance

There is a little bit of slop in the mounting brackets for the tail pipe, +/- 15mm or so but it cannot be brought in to far as there will then be contact with the right side frame down tube.

Thanks from Omaruru

Well, you could get the new folding type that I believe offers more clearance but it's kind of expensive. You could look for a '75 MKIII kick starterwhich offers some extra space there. You could bend the one that you already have, it's been mentioned here before and/or you could dent in the side of the pipe a bit. You're right about trying to push start it. Pushing it is okay for a time or two but is gonna get real old real quick. Cj

OMFG dent my pipes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the first step is to try and squeeze a bit more clearance by knocking the mounting bracket shims back a bit and then heat the @#$%er up and bend her a bit.

Thanks for the note, at least it presumes that in fact they will take some heat and let you bend them.

Cheers.

the rear Z plate spacer can be shortened a bit to gain some clearance. It take a lot of force to bend and hold onto the kicker to take such force heated or not. Kick clang kick clang...

No need to heat anything. Remove the lever then put the flat end in a good vise. Don't try to bend anything while it's still on the bike. Remove the folding pedal part. Get a round pipe or equvalent that will fit around the lever where you just removed the pedal.
Leave enough room for a protective pad of some sort where the pipe comes in contact with the chrome. Protect the chrome somehow. Then using the pipe as leverage gently bend the kick lever using short brief tugs until your clearance is accomplished. Refit & check & bend again if necessary. Repeat.......

I've done this many times without heat and patience. Good luck.

Do as what Tin s said, but what I did with mine was to put the bent part of the kicker in the vice (with soft jaws so not to damage the chrome) and slowly tighten the vice to push the bent part out a bit more, put a long pipe on the vice handle and tighten the vice on the bend the way it needs to go and it does look like your kicker has been bent, mine worked well after I did this.

I replaced my standard kicker with the folding kicker, it is longer so more levege and it never comes lose on the spline like my old kicker did and when folded it is right out of the way and doesn't stick in the back of my lower leg like my orginal one did.

Hope this helps

Ashley
