just watched silver spitfire return to England after prolonged trip around the world on bbc. the most beautiful machine ever built

I got news for you...… Spits were the most beautiful plane ever to take to the air. The limeys..... er uh … English outdid themselves and everyone else for beauty & sheer elegance there. More like fine art than a warplane.

BBMF, 6 MERLINS coming over, that's goosebumps. One lancaster, one hurricane, one spitfire. The Griffon engine has a noise off it's own. And of course our cousin's DC3 is still going strong.

was a reference to the victory roll. regardless of engine, but I get your point

had a dc 3 on display up the road in Aldershot outside 2 para. removed a while ago. guess why? Housing for immigrants mostly. I should know. I built most of them. most of the military town has been sold off. Love my country. Despise most of my self serving left wing politicians

Make hay with the building cos the bubble is at bursting point. My little town has doubled in size due to JLR up the road at Gaydon and ancillaries. We know where the automotive industry is heading ??? When the crash happens, youngest daughter may get on the property ladder with a repossessed overpriced house because there will be no work around to keep everything over inflated. Saving for years now, then they move the posts for a deposit. Bankers! The lot of them !

no chance. they all have kids who will need a home. over crowded and only going to get worse. Banging 'em out like rabbits!

The museum in Auckland has a cutaway Merlin engine that turns pretty cool.

I recognize the bones of our motors. LOL

Rolls Royce Merlin “F” category C, aircraft engine 1939 [1937?] and stand.
The “F” was the pre-production series of Merlin engines, and this was the 30th engine built at the Rolls Royce Experimental factory in Derby, England. It was later sectioned in the workshops of No 4 Maintenance Unit, RAF Ruislip MDX, and made into a demonstration display model.

Just think , our parents and grandparents went thru all that effort making and using this machinery (My father's side of the family had a machine shop and my Uncle ran it for the war effort making parts for tube bending mechinery---some of which made the intake tubing for these engines). Not to mention the suffering, loss and hardships encountered ( on my mother's side, their house - in Leyton, London was blown in half - bomb landed in the back yard & grand dad having been in WWI was too old for active duty again, but served in the Civil Air raid Patrol, helping dig folks out of the rubble after the all clear was sounded). So many years struggling only to wind up as a member state in the E.U. being told what to do from Brussels-------could have just waved a white flag-------sorry guys way off topic,---- great engine in the P-51 Mustang too.

Tenuous link alert.
Bought my Commado 750 in 1977 off person who lived locally..
His Dad helped to design the wiring loom for the Spitfire.

bit like spit and mustang. designed years apart when design and engineering was leaping forward at an incredible rate. spit only needed 1 merlin;) p38????

I would assume being a twin engine plane by design they needed two engines, one on each side.

Not that it is relevant to this thread, the P38 was the first 400 mph fighter in history and surprisingly had a better thrust/horsepower than many single engine fighters of WW2 including the early Spitfires hence its higher top speed.
