Hi guys,

My own rebuild is progressing even tho it's traveling along like molasses in winter  Most of that was down to the bad state of the frame. To cut a long story short I bought a new one, so things are moving along again.

Just out of interest...Was it a normal practice to stamp the gearbox with the frame number?

Just out of interest....

Cheers all.

Yes. It would also have matched the engine number, originally.

HI L.A.B :)

Thanks for the reply. I only asked as the ham fisted previous owner had left the thing in such a state, I wouldn't have put it past him to do it himself.

This particular gearbox doesn't seem to have a vent (I was watching the Mick Hemming gearbox DVD @ the w/e), There's not one on the inner case, or the inspection cap...So should I need to put one in the cap? If so what diameter hole should it be?

Thanks again,

S

You can put one in the cap or in the outer cover, only needs to be 1 or 2 mm. Mine has one in the top of the outer cover and is a brass threaded insert but you dont need to go to that effort.

Old Britts suggest around a #58 size drill bit: http://www.oldbritts.com/12_065199.html

Personally I've always been a little sceptical about the need for any additional vent or breather, as the clutch cable entry isn't sealed, so as I see it, there's no way any pressure could build up inside the gearbox? Although the factory did fit a vent to 850 MkIII gearboxes.

Thanks guys. :)

L.A.B,

I did notice the clutch cable was a bit of a sloppy fit. In that case I may well leave it until I've got the new cable in situ, if it's a tight squeeze, I'll put one in the cap.

:)

They all should vent by tiny pin hole in inspection cover and by the unsealed cable entry. Any more vents just invites water and grit entry or oil exit. just needs vent enough not to explode or push oil out to equalize air heating.
