I guess they were the right size because everything was new except for the sliders.

Yes give or take a couple of thousand, remarkably reliable most of the time as well, who said Brit bikes are unreliable! Just badly prepared.

They used to say a British car wasn't fully finished until the owner took delivery and made out his 'punch' list. I had a Sterling back in the late '80s-early '90s (they would dare call it a 'Rover' after the 3500 fiasco a few years earlier). The car was fantastic, except for a dozen or so niggling issues the Rover was never able to solve. Thank god it had a Honda drivetrain. We had the only 825 in South Florida with a manual transmission - what a fun car! Now the wife drives a Mini - German reliability with still a few quirks to remind us its assembled in Oxford - like the window motors that stick every month or two. Two sharp raps with a 'closed' hand 2" above the door speaker cures that!

No I managed to get them in and moving by hand........................................but I have big hands!

If i ever resort to a hammer its to hammer nails in, not motorcycle parts!!!

Now that sounds good, why do we fit new parts to 35 year old legs? still beyond me but to replace the legs with every fork rebuild gets a bit expensive, let me know how you get on I'd be intererested.

Either the bushings were the right size or your fork legs were so worn. :mrgreen:

You all are complaining that the parts dont fit, thats fair enough, but has any one measured why they dont fit, is it the new parts machined wrong or the 40 year old parts machined on 30 year old machinery.

Too be honest it doesn't really matter. If you think there wasn't fitting on the assembly line... keep in mind some of the tooling when these bikes were new was 30 years old!

Like I mentioned, as long as the parts are not loose, it's all good. I can make them fit. I don't think you guys understand how lucky we are to even be able to say that we can buy new parts for these old bikes.

There are a bunch of little parts in these forks and the parts book does a poor job of identifying them all. For example on the top of the damper rod there seems to be some sort of thick washer/spacer but it's not called out. Is that the fork spring locating bush? And what does it look like?

Does anyone have their forks apart so they can document all the little parts? I know GP had some forks he just put together.

I need to be able to tell what parts I have and what parts I still need. Thanks!
 
I am down to my last ten sets in bits, all the damper parts ready for the skip, along with some cross ply tyres and 6 volt bulbs...and a couple of books of Green shield stamps.. :!: :lol: Regards Lansdowne Eng....

I don't know what they are (at the moment) but they are not standard Commando damper parts?
