1954 J.A.P. ' sports ' 600 S. V. according to the Codes , whith the New Fangled Oil Pump Lubrication and the Dry Sump . Theres Three oil pipes in under there .

Found out in the Hills from Gundagai , N. S. W. , sitting in a scrap pile , brought back to the Big Smoke , as hand baggage on the Greyhound . Sprayed it with WD40 7 took the pictures , so ' As Found ' .
any info on tuneing these suckers , would be wellcomed . Thinking a 1 1/4 Carb would be about right .

1 & 1/4" is huge for an old sidevalve.
That manifold looks about 3/4 " ?
Ex-railway motive power ?
"tuning" it being a relative term, we hope, these were old thumpers par excellence.
Would have been sold as an industrial engine...

It would be wise indeed to strip it all down and remove all rust, gunge and hornets nests inside before doing anything with it.
It may be as clean as a whistle inside, but you'd be lucky - and not the first to destroy an old treasure through a hasty resurrection.
It only takes one grit in the bearings or rings, or one blocked oilway to make them rather second hand rather quickly.

Nice find.

P.S. Were JAP still making these by 1954.
Will have to dig up some codes....

The Norton 16H (500 sidevalve) has a 1" carb. I think the Big 4 (600 or so depending on the year) also a 1" and the BSA M21 1 1/16".
3/4" sounds small but 1 1/4" sounds on the large side.

Don't forget that this was likely sold/supplied as an industrial engine.
I had a BSA M20 engine that was similarly supplied/converted, with a constant throttle carb,
(convoluted looking big brass thing) and it was something like 7/8", with a butterfly.

Matt will have to measure that inlet manifold and report.
Motorcycle use could likely use a bigger carb than industrial use one...

Heres a J.A.P. identification chart : www.donaldantiquerototillers.com/JAPEngineChart.htm

just measured the ' manifold ', at the moment its 1" bore . Willneed the 1 1/4 " if Im to get 100 mph down Sulby Straight . ! :)

havnt rotated it yet , first stage will be get the head off , & move out the Redbacks & Tarantulas . :(
the muffler was stillmint & painted ,if not the header pipe . So Im hopeing it hasnt seen a lot of use .
Apparently some outfit still carries spares for them , so shouldnt be a lost cause entirely .

Hopefully find a old chassis thats suitable , though theyre seldom 20 bucks these days - so a ridgid wouldnt be to hard to knock up
if it comes to that .Coustom built with a rice burner front end & 4 speed trans . Maybe . . . one day . . . .

Good luck with that - you'll need it !!
Don't do anything irreversible to it in this quest.
The charm of these things is the strong thumping torque, way low down in the rev range.

Don't forget to post the graph from the dyno when you've tuned and tested it. You should have a look in the AMA rule book and see if there is a class for it at Bonneville - might take a record.

Nice save Matt, thanks for posting it up here. I will be looking forward to seeing how the tear down goes.

the UCZ Engine Manual pdf http://howard-rotavator-spares.com/pdf/ ... ndbook.pdf

manadged to strip it , most v good . some dampness in the case . further inspection reqired . pistons still rather stuck - will use a press there .

" I've had an email from Michael Brudar who currently owns the big JAP in the above double exposure.
He says...
"..the double exposure is of my Hargreaves_JAP, built in Melbourne in the mid 30's - CS1 Norton frame, Coventry Eagle flying 8 side valve crankcases ..Dunelt heads and barrels.
The bike was used for all sorts of competition in Victoria including road racing, hill climbs and later grass track with a sidecar.
The photo below is at Ballarat road races, ridden by Dennis Skinner. "

That looks like the link to Greg been posted here, a few times...

So, tell us, how is the 600 going ?

sitting dismantled in the corner of the shed dismantled awaiting cleanig . accidently rang a Gem 3 purveyor today , 600s a bit steep for a YCZ  traced a parts source . Wreckers crushed the Cosworth :x theyre all in a rush in the Big City . They seem a bit odd . It must be the traffic fumes .

Those o.h.v. top ends go on the S.V. cases , Rohan .

Thinking the Iron Flywheels might not be up to the ' Ton Downt Bypass ' trip , we shall see .

Think you're going to find the whole thing is not up to a ton.
Don't butcher it, keep away from those fumes and keep it as is and enjoy the slow pace of life.

Just researhing its potential . :) If the big end / crank were the same specs as the ohv 1000 , it might take a bit of stick . But it looks like it isnt .
Undertakeinfg another project which is more purrformace biased . This will be dormant for a while , though Id better get up the way and get what
nos spares are available .
YES , Mark - cant think of a reason why it wouldnt , will wait and see if a 16H frame and Webb Girder assy fall out of the sky on me . May well go the way
of the Triton though , home build widelineish with Tri 68 swing arm , with forks & brakes on the front .

Early Classic Raceing story in N.Z. , where the ' in ' set required puka works racers , was a Lad with a 741B , with annual improvements over 5 years had it leading the works racers ,
whereupon it Grenaded spectacularly reduceing itself to scrap entirely . So , while 30 horse / the Ton may be available , supercharged nitro burning tyre shredding action is unlikely .
Though Phil Irvine wrote a artical on supercharged rooadsters , this is unlikely also . Unless one of these falls out of the sky also . Though those Kompressor mercs could end up in the
scrap yard & it would be one way to get a S.V. to breath .
Just fell over a suitable muffler in the workshop , so thats set aside , anyway .
One of the old positive stop foot shift boxes & a Ridgid frame would be a start , We Shall See .

Ican , Ican , i know I can . :x
