After purchasing my Commando several weeks ago, I finally got it fired up today after cleaning the severely gummed up Mikuni. Reinstalled the carb and it fired up on the 3rd kick. The bike hadn't been started in a year or so and this surprised me in a good way. After a minute or so it settled into a 1300-1400 rpm idle.
Took a very leisurely ride of a couple miles with little drama.
My biggest concern is a lazy throttle that when twisted didn't want to return to lower revs for a few seconds. I need to look into the throttle cable routing at a later date.
I'm getting ready to fly to Santiago, Chile to inspect a machine we're having built there. Will be gone until Friday and can't wait to get back and continue this most excellent adventure.

Tad :D

I have experienced the same problem with the 34mm mikuni,I consulted
www.allensperformance.co.uk/ and they recommended I use the slide spring from the 38mm race mikuni although 5mm shorter it is made from a heavier grade of wire and has a more tension...it also worth while giving the slide a good clean and polish and make sure you can hear it bottom out when you shut the throttle (without the engine running)...

I've also heard of people fitting an Amal slide spring to supplement the Mikuni spring. They say it works great.

Haven't tried it myself, being more of an Amal girl :D
