Putting together a 74 850. Can anyone suggest what type of lube to use to install the rubber bushings into the front and rear engine mounts? Thanks

Soapy water or dry lube teflon or graphite spray, start rubber edge in tube, then wood block with a big hard hammer slam pretty much get's em in one swell swoop, then can bump to fine tune centering. Grease and oil tend to decay the rubber.

There is some proper lube made just for this application. A search of isolastic lube or similar may produce results, it has been around before. I think you can get samples free too. I used silicone grease but some say that will deteriorate the rubber too, I don't know why, silicone is used as a rubber lube.

Yep, rubber-friendly grease is what you want.

I have some that's black, can't recall the name...

I used a faucet grease and the trouble with these rubber greases is that they do not dissipate leaving you with an assembly the never quite sets. With the soaps and self dissipating lubes, the assembly will set and not be loosy goosy. Read up on the P-80 stuff to get an idea on how they work. Besides, it's free.

pvisseriii, could you expand on the concept of new iso installation taking a fixed set? All's I know is babying the insertion is a pita, so I'm a wham bam get er done guy now with what ever lube handy that leaves the least mess after wards.

Sorry but KY (vaseline ) deteriorates rubber (leave it on your .... for a few weeks and see for yourself)
I use rubbergrease for assembling brakecomponents

another thing about those non return oil valves .As my oil is in my frame i cannot easily check my oillevel so after 1000km I drain the oil to check . I run 2.5l in it
when i drained it (with those gadgets on ) i was chocked to see how little oil was left ,at least 1/2 l was gone
i undid the drainplug in the cases and very little oil dribled out But it kept dribbling out for quite a few days ,all in all the missing oil appearded .I could not see where it was coming from and then ,after a few witkaps ,I saw the light ;timingcase
the oilmist being sucked up by that poxy valve loses it oil in the tc and tha oil can only slowly get back into the main cases
but when it does it is actually wetsumping (,but perhaps there is onother nonreturn valve for that ? ) the oil from the tc can only get back through the bearing and that is shielded by that washer
the hedge behind is now a nonreturnvalve richer

Gerry,

KY and Vaseline and very different products.

Vaseline is "Petroleum Jelly", KY is Glycerine, water and vegetable gum.

I'd suggest a trip to Thailand as the best avenue for self education on this particular topic.

I am thinking, with all this talk of KY jelly and Thailand, maybe electrical wire pulling lubricant might work. It is a soap, and does not degrade thermoplastic insulation , at least.

That is a great idea. I would have to say that it would work just fine. KY seems proper also but that "Her Pleasure" stuff is really expensive......I think. I guess it all depend on how you want to treat the old girl. Vasaline? No.

Whatever you use for a lubricant, you want to get the inside of the iso tubes as clean as possible. A cheap spring-loaded hone works well. Also, grease the bolts. The next guy to take it apart will thank you.

thanks
something new has been learned
so you think i can leave the KY on it ????
i will start the test tomorow

KY jelly is personal lubricant that is water soluble and condom safe so fine on iso rubbers. Likely will just dry out to a powdery crust you can add some water to re-slick for next removal. Same stuff that works for tire changes will work on iso's or just nothing but smooth tube ID and a couple whomps by hammer and wood block.
