i googled '1972 norton commando photos'.

it looks like some had them and some didn't

That front brake appears to be a Brembo and was not a stock item.

was looking at this photo,

it looks like to mod to accept the disc brake is bolted on and not cast into the right fork. anybody know?

I know I wouldn`t trust that 1/2-arsed lash-up, some skilled welding would be preferable I.M.O.

Not for disc brake.

AND, Auction states "For parts or not working"

Brake mount could be on the back of the right leg. If it was drum there should be a boss on the leg. Right?

Come to think of it, I can't really make out the backside of the right slider.
Better contacty the seller.

To amuse myself I sent him a message via ebay already.

That half-arsed conversion pictured is not a Norton set of forklegs anyway. Looks Italian to me.

Hi

I have an old race bike with a brazed up bracket to mount a Lockheed caliper on Norton drum forks. Period mod, works well,
but you would have to ask why do it now!
Disc forks come up on e bay as often as drum & the price difference is not worth the hassle.

ya mean the bike don't stop better with a front disc?

I did drop the hint back at: "Newer front end on a '70" when I said:
"just a matter of replacing the necessary parts-but it would be a rather costly exercise for little or no gain in braking performance unless you were to fit upgraded disc brake parts."

Unless you were to alter the hydraulic ratio (by sleeving the master cylinder or fit one with a smaller piston) or upgrade the brake (like the one on the "72 model" photo you posted above with the Grimeca caliper) then the results may be disappointing because you may find the standard disc brake isn't much better than the drum.

I resemble these pictures. Actually that is a marzocci 35mm frontend that came on my 72 combat. It had a homemade bracket for the caliper. I ditched it for a stock frontend. 72 was the year for the disk brake transition. some had them and some had drums. You need this setup, same bike as before now with stock frontend.

Also check out Norman White's web site. They have a set up that looks really SWEET!!

Sweet perhaps but near-on £1,500 + 20% VAT (OK, no VAT outside EU) for the kit (now with AP racing calipers instead of Brembos) plus a rim, spokes and master cylinder would be required, but that's still cheaper than some of the Norvil D/D kits!

Hi Goo

My road bike went to the back of the garage for 2 years because of the price of the twin disc wheel from Norvil. I had everything else!!!
It was £750 at the time. Could not get my head around ordering different spacers for single or twin disc until I saw the other fork leg. New spindle spacers twin disc wheel calipers mastercylinder stainless hoses alloy lockheed calipers. I had a scabby standard set up that would have got me on the road & would have worked pretty well. As Lab said you can get a drum to work really well, you can get a disc to work a little bit better BUT unless you ride 2 up or are a bit bigger than my 17 stone the twin disc/upgraded bigger discs twin piston calipers etc, set up is not required. Then again if you like to give it the biz in todays traffic, its nice to have a bigger reserve in the braking department.
Just dont let it keep you off the road while you save up.

Chris
