My old gasket from 1978 looks like the one pictured somewhat. Doesn't have the printing on it but it does have "TOP" imprinted on one side. Wonder why.

Old Andover Norton gasket with TOP on the opposite side to the printing. It has two drain holes.

If I remember correctly it's to do with the bridge between the flame rings which should face down.

Thank you all. The reason I asked was that I did read somewhere about the bridge but it dd not say
between the flame rings. So to be honest, I thought there might be some sort on indent on one side of the flame rings.
But now I understand. I am grateful

The original halite flame ring head gaskets never had a bridge joining the rings.
My recollection is that the two faces were impregnated with different adhesives to bond with the different head and barrel materials. Hence the need to stamp “top” on the top surface. Also the reason for having the head and barrel faces clean, dry and importantly, free from any lubricant or sealant.

I have one of each mentioned. The one that was installed in 1978 has no bridge and another unused one with the bridge. Both have the word TOP not printed but stamped into them.
