Wouldn't you know it... just as our weather pattern is turning drier with clear breezy days and stardusted night skies, something's changing with the gearbox. Maybe its the barometric pressure.

I noticed it on a beer run last night; with every shift, the normally subtle click you hear when changing gears is now quite LOUD. Fluids in gearbox and primary are normal. Anybody know what's up with that?

Thanks!

Don

Hey Don, Do you mean just that first click into first gear or all gear changes.
Is it a gear box noise or clutch and rear chain ?
It sounds as though you might be looking into the clutch shortly, may be sticky or worn plates.
Have you been doing "Burnouts" lately.?

Aussie, its with every shift and it seems to be coming from the primary side. I just cleaned those plates and changed the ATF not more than 1000 miles back. But I think you're right... clutch maintenance time again

Burnouts? hehe... yeah the thing brings out the teenager in me. Love that g-force as it almost pulls me off the handlebars, conditions permitting, of course.

cheers,

Don

The sintered bronze clutch plates give off gooy paste , if theyre fitted .Strip and wipe resolves .
I stoped slideing mine, just ' let it in ' to double cleaning interval . Action goes a little soft and draggy .
Otherwise youre overtired and unco-ordinated and a mass of raw nerves , What Were You Up To , Last weekend .

for some reason Matt, I can't remember!

Oh well, I don't forget the important stuff; this weekend I'll be into the primary and cutting and chipping brush...

cheers,

Don

Well....
I was able to get into it friday afternoon, while still on the clock....

Clutch was clean inside, with steel plates, not the bronze. But the primary chain was loose as a goose, Fixed that, but also found the 3 bolts holding the primary cover to the motor were loose as well, you could shake the entire primary cover like your girlfriend's whatchamacallit! Blue locktite will hold that.

Once the primary was buttoned up, rear chain needed to be tightened, and then I found the axle nut was loose too! I had been thinking the ride was getting a bit sloppy, hehe.

Late for dinner (Friday thru Sunday dinner is a must do in our house) gotta run, test ride tomorrow.

Cheers,

Don

Was a bloke with a 58 speed Twin , Sporster like . Going down steep twisty hills , sometimes Id wonder ,
If the font wheel might fall off . . .

I think you could keep a ' service notebook ' , so as you recall one or two things . I need to do it with the car,
If I remember .

I hope so - but it's hard to get the crankcase threads clean enough. They really shouldn't work loose on you if you're using the 'crankcase fixing bolt washer'; #060395.

Torque the bolt, bend the tab up on a flat, and that booger isn't going anywhere.

Only down side is that (I think) you have to pull the stator to get to them.

Ted

Some goo on those 3 bolt threads is a good idea. If wetsumped, drain crankcase first. I think a few blasts of Brakleen or equivalent should get those threads clean enough. Was a good thing you went in there. Are you saying the clutch plates are steel on steel? I don't think so.

I think the summer beer runs are about over here. The wet leaves are deadly. They are mashed into the road surface now. I'm done riding. I think this will be a cylinder head to Leo Goff winter.

It's all good then Don, Just what ever you do,
DON'T PUT BLUE LOCKTITE ON YOUR GIRLFRIENDS WATCHAMACALLIT. PLEASE.
I think one of my first girlfriends did that and it took for ever to get it off.!!
AC.
