Is it a Mk 2A or Mk 2 or Mk1A or Mk 1? (2015)

Informative. At least I now know I have a MK2. It's a 73, with battery down the frame not cross, original style air box and original Norton flutted pea shooters, and a single Dzus fastener at the top front of the left side cover. And my bike is all original.

Always wondered about some of these details.

Thanks

Interesting indeed. I'm owner of a 74 MK2, purchased new, out of the box in July of 1977 and am the original owner. Quite a story about the purchase but I won't go into that here. I discovered just today, mine was assembled with the MK2A chain guard. The original had stress cracked and rusted on the forward top end and a new replacement was received today. Pairing up new to old, I spotted a big difference. The original has a long slot cut out in the direction from rear to front and when guard is installed, allows one access to view brake shoe wear through an inspection port located on the brake plate. The MK2 guard I received has no slot and would completely cover the inspection port. That is the only MK2A item I can find on the bike. Filter box is metal, battery box runs lengthwise and left side cover has no lower Duiz connector. I prefer the function and look of the original MK2A guard and am sending the one received back for exchange.

The slotted chain guard (065818) was fitted to Mk2 and Mk2A models from January 1974.

There should have been a rubber grommet in that port to stop dirt and rain water. What about the engine metal oil junction pipes are they angled straight or do they have a sweep and then run almost horizontal near to where they connect to the rubber oil pipes ?

Yes, has both a top and bottom port plug. It was necessary to remove the top plug to remove the chain guard due to hardly any clearance between the chain guard and the brake cover plate

The oil junction block tubes are straight and angled vertically between engine and tranny with no horizontal sweep

There should be two ports and two grommets for checking each brake shoe lining.

Late Mk2s can also have the Mk2A rectifier bracket.

850 Mk2 & Mk2A parts supplement. Note that the supplement was not illustrated, the '73 diagrams have been added.

Yes, two ports, two grommets.

Also came with the rectifier bracket.

My Parts List manual, 06-5034, is an earlier version and includes 750 models w/engine numbers from 212278. i haven't seen any variances so far however I'll certainly reference parts supplement 06-5988 as well on any future work. Appreciated!

This is an old but handy thread. Since my 74 Commando (311082) was purchased by a GI while stationed in England at Elite Motors, I always assumed it was a MK2A. I never researched it thoroughly. After reading through this thread my bike has the earmarks of an "A". The only thing not correct is the mufflers, which were replaced with the typical non-A type.

Is it a Mk 2A or Mk 2 or Mk1A or Mk 1? (2015)
