I have been wondering if it was possible to use a quad or X ring seal in place of the felt seal on the inner primary? Not sure it would work with the spinning main shaft and the heat it would build up. Just a thought that it might be an easier way to deal with oil leaks. What do you think? Has anyone ever tried this?

the OD to ID on the felt is a lot greater than what you will find on an X ring, also I am not fond of an O or X ring on a spinning shaft.

D/t the motion the seal must to slide its mount plates on inner case to adj tranny for chain tension and removal the rubber seal would likely be stretched , binding mount sliding and distorting to seal well and soon rubbed raw. Its a clunker obsolete stop gap design till Norton could come up with something actually modern and likely thought the properly set chain oiler would well cover the felt seal drool. A wet felt mooshes thinner to stuff in and can hair blow dry to fluff back up some. Some oil can get between the sliders to weeps too. Best wishes on a clean machine.

.

Actually did come up with something modern, the MK3.

I've read there is an improved inner metal plate, but I've never been able to find it. There really shouldn't be that much oil coming out of that "seal" unless there's too much oil in the primary. Mine hasn't been bad since about 1500 miles after rebuild. If you have the chain oiler, you can't tell, other things can happen too that look like that's the problem. You can take a small camera and shoot it up in there to see what's going on.

Inner primary felt seal

In place of the felt seal in the inner primary case supplied with the Alton Ekit is a white nylon (or similar looking plastic) ring between the to metal disc which are pop riveted together. Mine runs belt drive so i can't comment on how effective it is at sealing and due to fitting an outrigger bearing which ment cutting all that area of case off after running for only few hundred miles i can't comment on how long it lasts either.

If you put the right amount of oil in the primary the oil shouldn't get up there, between 5 to 7 fl onces is all that is needed to slash the chain.
