I picked up a used inner primary case and have a couple of questions:

1) The plate, 06-0769, which retains the felt washer is a bit deformed. Looks like its is form the PO twisting the cover to get it off. I see Old Brits sells a replacement. The existing plate has an inner and outer that is tack welded together, it also floats within the bore. Can anyone share the steps in replacing this part?

2) I also noticed Old Brits refers to the Pre-MK3 primary cover. How many different versions of the inner primary cover were offered, and are they interchangeable? I also wold like to know how to identify them.

Thanks, Gary

I've heard of using pop-rivets to replace the tack welds.

Thanks Dave.
I was thinking about pop rivets, they are well within my limited abilities. However, I would still like to hear form someone who has tackled this fix.

Can anyone help with the inner primary covers and how to identify them?

The pre mk3 is what you want. The mk3 inner, and outer for that matter, is proprietary to the MK3 have the hole for the left hand shifter.
Drill out the spot welds. Clamp the 2 new halves together keeping it aligned and the faces oriented together as they would be finally assembled and drill pop rivet holes. Mark the halves because free drilling new holes will not be uniform. No big whoop. Don't for get a fresh felt. Oil it up and sandwich in place before pop riveting together, they can be a bugger to pry in later.

You have made the seal holder repair sound simple enough. I should be able to handle aligning, drilling and pop-riveting. Now I've probably just jinxed myself!

Unfortunately, I don't have the new and old cover in the same place for comparison. From recollection they are close in both shape and size. Additionally the replacement does not have the extra hole for a shifter so I might just be alright.

Thank you!
