I know this is stupid... but I've looked everywhere... Old Britts Tech articles, Haynes Manual, Factory Workshop Manual, Parts List... I really don't know what to do next...
Here's the Barn Find right now...
I'm Stuck what do I do now? SOLVED Due to your Help

I can't figure out how to remove the rear isolastic mount :?: Should I remove the engine first, then the cradle and then the rear swing arm?

I've read the workshop manual several times regarding the removal of the rear mount but I just don't understand it... do i just use a large hammer on the shaft?

I don't want to do anything stupid... please help. I'd like to send the frame to powder coat by the end of the week if possible.

Thanks,

Re: I'm Stuck what do I do now?

I did it by putting a jack under the front iso hold it steady and used another jack to lift the frame up

Re: I'm Stuck what do I do now?

Support cradle. Remove engine with front iso. Set aside. Remove gearbox. Support cradle. Remove (if it will come out) the rear iso stud. It very well may be rusted to the isos. The good news is the studf is only $7.50 so you won't cry if you get medieval on it.

I'm doing the exact opposite right now (installing).

Re: I'm Stuck what do I do now?

When you say "remove rear iso stud"... do you mean take a large hammer and "pound" on the shaft? Left to right or right to left... any difference? I have been soaking the shaft at as many available points as possible.

Will it be easier with the engine and gearbox out? I'm still not sure how one is supposed to remove the iso shaft... the workshop manual refers to using a pry bar... but i don't understand where to "pry" :(

I almost forgot... Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Forgive me if I am misunderstanding, but I assume you are having difficulty removing the long shaft that passes through the centre of the rear iso mount. This is nothing more than a long parallel rod with a thread on each end and should slide out easily. If it doesn't it is probably corroded in place and brute force &/or a hacksaw may be your only options. Don't knock lumps out of the frame or cradle (they are the expensive bits!) and I would certainly remove the engine & gearbox before getting violent. Reference to pry bar in the manual relates to removal of the iso rubbers from the gearbox cradle - it has nothing to do with removal of the cradle from the frame.

Hope this helps

Mitch

Thanks Mitch... you are correct. I will continue to lubricate the shaft... and remove the engine and gearbox first.

Re: I'm Stuck what do I do now?

I typically use a block of hardwood and a 5-lb sledge or large ball-peen to what the stud; that way, the threads are not damaged.

Re: I'm Stuck what do I do now?

:( Well I'm still Stuck! No Joy... I can get the rear iso shaft to rotate (both clockwise and counter-clockwise) when I put a wrench on either end nut... but it will not move laterally when i pound on it... I think it might be time for "Andy's" hacksaw... but I don't know exactly where to apply it?

I currently have the front of the frame supported on a jack and I have a separate jack supporting the rear cradle... if I move the rear jack (up or down slightly) I can see movement in the left and right isolastic shims?? I plan to replace the shaft with a new S/S one, so I'm not too worried about the shaft... I just don't want to damage the frame.

Any ideas?

Hardwood & ball-peen hammer. I'm telling you.

Good question. You can't typically go inside the frame. I guess maybe right outside the frame tab and then pry? Dunno.

If it's turning it might just be turning the whole iso set up. Which doesn't do you any good. Bigger hammer or a press. Hammer will loosen the bolt and free it from the iso.

I would not hit it too hard with a hammer : the frame is not very strong .
You could try to pull it out by placing different lengths of spacers ( sockets ? ) over the bolt and tighten the nut .

Obviously not American. Bigger hammer is always the answer.

I've heard my old Dad refer to a hammer as an "American Screwdriver"

No idea where the expression came from. Wartime I suppose as that's the only time that he'd have seen US fitters in action !

Yes ... next step is dynamite .
Still not willing : nuke'em !

Dynamite is the fault of the Swedes, and nuclear was German. Either is within reason for a stuck iso bolt.

Re: I'm Stuck what do I do now?

Ludwig has the right idea. Use a tube or socket and pull the stud with the nut. Since it turns, you may need to double nut the opposite end and hold it to prevent this. Once it starts to move you hopefully will be able to drive it out. Beating on it with a hammer is just absorbed by the rubbers.

Re: I'm Stuck what do I do now?

Apply a combination of the two. Use a short piece of pipe with a washer or deeps socket and apply tension on the shaft by turning the nut in. Then strike it with a blow from the other end with the wood block between as GP suggested. It will come out.
Turn the nut on the shaft in = Tension…then a smack. Wind in more tension then a smack etc. etc. Take it eeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz. 8)

I agree thats how I helped a friend get his out hammering just gets absorbed by the Iso's.....once you break the initial rust link it should be OK.

Do you have any dies?

Re: I'm Stuck what do I do now?

My hacksaw surgery came about because it became immediately apparent that the stud was just transmitting the hammer blows into the isos, and the frame would not provide sufficient reaction to loosen the stud.
I got the hacksaw blade in where the bronze washers live - with everything loose I managed to get sufficient clearance to get the blade onto the stud, being careful not to cut into the shim carriers. I was willing to sacrifice the bronze impregnated washers along with that f***ing stud!

Re: I'm Stuck what do I do now?

You can take a threaded rod and a piece of pipe. Couple the shaft to the rod with a nut. Use the pipe and another nut on the outer end and draw the shaft out with little effort.
