Just flew in yesterday from Melbourne. Two weeks ago I flew into Melbourne, picked up my Norton and began a two week adventure, starting at the Island Classic at the Philip Island circuit. Great fun! Finally met Kenny Cummings and a bunch of other guys, including forum members.

I then started moving north, catching up with Sean in Frankston and a look at his well prepared 850. Moving on through Melbourne and on to Melton for a new tyre. Stopping in Kilmore overnight, I stopped and had a grest chat with Ron Harrop, who was at the helm of Harrops when I had my original batch of heads made. After that, I set off up the Hume Highway amid pouring rain (summer in Victoria, I should have known!). 7 hours of constant rain later, with a stop off to catch up with acotrel in Benalla, I made it to Yass, where the rain stopped. The electronic speedo was full of water and ceased telling the story. Dry to Goulburn, where I stayed the night to dry out. Off to Mittagong the next day to catch up with our old friend, Phil Yates. A lovely part of the world. Stayed a couple of days with Phil then moved on to the coast at Nowra and then proceeded on down, ultimately to Melbourne amid more rain on the run down. Dried up in Victoria, bypassed Melbourne and on to Bendigo. Caught up with Mick at Classic Road and Race in Bridgewater, then on to see Charlie Osterfield in Wedderburn, who specialises in Norton restos, after a tip from a local.

All great stuff!

Casualties after 3000 (approx) kilometres were the Smiths electronic speedo and the ignition switch, which had been fitted upside down and water poured in the drain hole, rendering it kaput. A simple toggle switch got around that problem and the mighty Norton purred for the rest of the trip.

On the whole, a great experience. Photos and video to follow.

Yes, well, that is what I am expecting. The rain was quite intense but the instrument should be up to the job.

How did you get the Commando backwards and forwards between Western Australia and Victoria ? I was very impressed with it and I had a look at 'My Tangerine Norton' on Youtube - it has got a bit of go.

I'm impressed. Sounds like a great adventure. Looking forward to pics and/or video.

Some crazy Aussie came meandering into our garage, walked right past Colin Edwards with his hand extended, and made a spectacle of himself. It was great to finally meet "The Wizard of Oz", Mr. Fullauto himself. Then Joe Fox showed up and the party started! There were a salvo of other listers who were there as well and we all convened in the bike parking area for a serious tire-kicking session. Good stuff. I'm sure Mr. Cockram has some snaps somewhere.

And let me say for the record - racing a motorcycle on the Phillip Island GP Circuit is like racing in heaven. This place/event is, without question, the greatest I will ever know. Lots of Nortons used in anger down under.

Pity I didn't know you were in the area, you rode within cooee of my place in Corinella, could have shown you some epic backroads.

Classic! Sounds like the priorities were right there.

Just did my first track day on The Island (albeit on the ever-lovin' TRX) and gotta say it was one of the best days ever. Huge respect for those that race on it.

Hahahahaha! Tell the truth, Kenny. I saw Kenny wandering through the pits with his mate Helmut, and, knowing that he didn't have a clue what I looked like, rushed up to him like an adoring teenage fan and said, "You're Kenny, aren't you? Kenny Roberts!" The look on his face was priceless. He just said, "Kenny Roberts??" At this point it just got too much for me and I started laughing. I then introduced myself and his face lit up. We had a great weekend together with much laughter. A great bloke! His Seeley Matchless is an absolute work of art! Can't wait until he brings his Norton out here.

This must be some form of video editing. Places like this don't exist anymore. Looks like a great ride. Now, if the cost of a FullAuto head can get into the range that a pensioner can afford. Thanks for sharing.

the price of entry is the price of a fullauto head, meer mortals need not apply, pensioners ? yeah i know it seems steep but when yo need one there is no alternative...

Hey , stop telling everybody what fantastic riding roads we have here , or they'll all want to come !
Though seriously , I thought you were just going to the classic and back ( should of asked I guess ) . Members of the Norton Owners Club Victoria would have liked to have met you and ridden with you around our hundreds of kilometers of great mountain roads . You probably met some of them anyway , including Charlie .
The same applies to anybody wanting to come over , give the club a tinkle and we can help show you around . Check out our website at :

Mesmerizing lovely lonely ride but someones got to do it. Its similar to a lot of the rural Ozarks, with less steeps, so feels like home to me on ease of Commando exhaust notes. Didn't see any animals to spoil the flowing sense, cool.
