That's an awesome bike.
My Commando is still a work in progress, but I did put a flat slide carb on it before I started it for the first time. Big difference from the original Amals on the first one I owned. Comparing the Norton to Triumph's is a bit difficult. I had a few BSA's and a Triumph before I bought the first Norton and the difference is night and day. The first ride on the Norton and the smoothness and torque were a completely different experience. Like you said take nothing away from the Triumph's but riding the Norton was just plain fun and even relaxing to some degree. I rode mine back and forth to work for most of the time I had it (summer time) and that was the best part of the day
I agree with improvements and bringing the Norton into the 21st century (well at least the late 20th Century). That's why I have been concentrating on suspension and brakes. I think the ride can be better and for sure the stopping can.
