Respect you elders!
decat shorts first fire up at Donington
I can hear it . What system have you got on ? The Shorties ?
Yes, the decat pipes and the shorties. I don't have a pic but they are the same as those that Nigel has been enjoying on his cafe. They don't quite kill the engine clatter but do a pretty good job at masking it.
I have the de-cat pipes and loud reverse cones. Sound lovely, but the mechanical noise/clatter is still there. Do we know exactly what the clatter is? Maybe its not a valve style clatter, it sounds deeper. Does anyone know what it is, has anyone remedied it?
Sorry if I'm crossing topic boundaries.
Everyone has their opinion, but to know for sure where the noises emanate from, Norton would have to use an anechoic chamber and position microphones around the bike while it is running. That will allow the engineers to precisely locate the engine areas producing the loudest noises. Finding the locus of the noise is one thing, re-engineering the engine or covers to lower the noise would require additional development costs. Not too sure how keen Norton would be about that.

You have a bunch of moving parts rattling around in that bugger lifters push rods valves rocker arms and all the bits associated with gear driven primaries. You also have air cooled motor with bunches of fins that are like little speakers broadcasting noise.... think of the old ring ding two stroke motors of old. Ducati's with dry clutch and desmodronic valves have a similar kind of wrattle and buzz. Just a thought
I like the noise. Don't like it? Buy Japanese.
I like the noise of the 961 to. I like all engines that are air-cooled.
Noise comes from Primary drive gears , clutch and valve train . If my bike hasn't been started in a month , oil drains out of lifters , push rods , and crank oil manifold into the sump . When first started , the oil pressure needs to build up again so I get a lifter clatter noise (very noticeable) . This lasts for 2 seconds or less and then quiets after oil fills them. This noise is there all the time when you are running the bike only subdued . Yes , This model needs to be air - cooled in my opinion . Let the 650 do water cooling high performance . The 650 engine noise should be much quieter too and the HP per CC will be right up there . And , if it is as light as they say " look out Thruxton R . " I hope Norton gets this right !
I hear ya, just going difficult to look retro with that engine. Thaiumph did a good job with that. Would be nice if Norton can too.
Tony, are you referring to this?
Tony ,2014 sport 8721 miles
That is the base engine . YES but the sport bike version.
Tony, instead of you updating this randomly, why don’t you do it monthly?
Folk could post their miles at the end of the month and you update it in one go?
Unless Jerry has the technology to create a table that we could access and update ourselves?
I would also suggest it should become a dedicated thread with a new name.
1200 on my CR now
Hey BritTwit. Today is the day. Low to mid 70s F.
I am open for any of this. Maybe call it Commando 961 Mileage Log ?
Or may be just 961 log, don’t wanna upset the domiracers / dominators or any future specials ?
