Hunting and High idle permanent fix! - TRIAL

Hi Tony,
I have been trying to acquire the Heat insulator Flange from Norton and am having little to no success. I am dealing with Carmen and I mentioned that Rob should be aware of the part, however I have had no response. Would you by any chance have the e-mail invoice with the part number on it. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. As I mentioned in an earlier post I did the SC Idle set and determined the IAC motor is faulty. I would like to try the flange before I replace the motor.

When they mention the Heat Insulator Washers are they just referring to 6mm SS washers!

I wasn't sure what you were referring to so I checked the diagram in my manual (2013), where it shows item 27 as Heat Insulator Washer (silicon). I didn't have any washers there, just the M6 allen bolts fixing the fuel rail to the throttle body. I'm not sure what purpose a silicon washer would serve between the bolt head and the fuel rail. The diagram also shows the Heat Insulator Flange (item 25) which is the gasket you were asking about, and wasn't fitted to my bike either.

Thanks for the pic, my manual shows 4 o-rings and a Heat insulator Flange. I suspect the ( _R1 ) is putting o-rings with Flange. I think it makes sense however they seem to be having difficulty at Norton finding the part number. Do you now have the Heat Insulator Flange on your bike and did you notice any difference with the IAC motor function as to idle.

I think it should be installed in any case . I noticed a small difference , not night and day .

At idle the bike is not in gear so not in danger of moving forward?

But in gear its the same as a partially open throttle, less engine breaking at higher speeds and at low speeds the engine provides more power than expected on a closed throttle. Braking distances increase and as the idle speed changes the braking distances change both up and down.

I received the Flange on the 8th of July, it took almost 2 months to get it sorted. It is the same as the photos posted but did not come with a part number. I look forward to install and add washers under the bolts. I feel this could be the source of an air leak.
Thanks to TonyA as well

I am working on another Idle improvement project . When I start testing it , I will post the results and what I did to get there.

No need for that , I mean that's another option but not necessary for reliable idle with an SC ECU . And I am not talking about the NAS valve either . This one is a solid fix and it disappoints me that Norton gave up on SCS without digging into it further . I think that the SCS ECU makes better power and has great throttle response once the engine is warmed up . The only thing that it lacked was a good stable idle cold and hot ! Stay tuned , I am still testing but things are looking real good .

Sounds interesting.

I adjusted the reach of the idle motor into the IAM cap . I did this by decking the flange of the cap just under 1mm . About .032 inch I measured . That was all it needed . After that it was a matter using the software to set the throttle screw using SXCar when the engine was at 120 deg C . I had used two box fans to help cool it down . There is a lot to talk about , but I will just take questions and give my answers if a member asks something specific.

Sounds like a very simple solution thanks Tony.
Do you have any pics of the work so that the feeble minded among us (for example me) cant possible do the wrong thing.

Tony any explanation of why the decking of the cap works to improve idling?

It moves the IAM plunger closer to the cap seat and therefore reduces the range it must travel to close off the air flow. When the final Idle duty cycle reaches 0 % , the plunger is as far in as it is going to go . It can only open (retract) or stay at 0 % (fully extended) .

I used a piece of thick plate glass and fine sandpaper 220 and 320 grit , go slowly measure often . This surface needs to be flat and the same thickness all the across . Vernier calipers are a good idea for measuring it.
