RE: Hunter S Thompson's "Song Of The sausage Creature" (as linked above):

For those who don't know- this appeared as an article/review of the Ducati 900SS in Cycle World at the time of the Ducati release. The CW "community" was outraged and PO'd, so much so that letters to the editor came in and were posted for a LOOOOOOONNNNGGG time after the article appeared. heh heh. Quite naturally, the Good Doctor claimed it was pure satire.

Ah yes the good doctor,as teen age kids we re enacted our own version of fear and loathing not in Las Vegas but in Baltimore ...we defintly did it up gonzo style ...when I think about the altered states of conciousness I rode my first norton in it makes me break out in a cold sweat... Me and a bunch of my buddies are lucky to be alive but hey we've learned a lot in 40 years.... Having said that there is still
Deep inside, lurking in limbo that gonzo spirit and I hope it never fades away, between hunter Thompson,Jack Kerouac,Lawrence Ferlinghetti, jerry Garcia and dr Richard Albert I have a pretty good road map in life !
As your attorney.........

Alrighty Lead zefer that is the spirit of my take on life with that heavy list of world changing mentors with honorable mention to Tim Leary isolation tanks and Dr. Lilly with electrically assisted mind merging into self or dolphins. Beatles and war riots and Pink Floyd and fast riding and Mood Blues best way to travel. Hunter was a curmudgeon disgusted with world affairs so may not of been trying to extend his life while plotting this or that, someone that conscious does not off themselves mid sentence to wife with an empty chamber automatic. We are here by pure magic chance only.

The real mystery is how Thompson lived as long as he did, drinking whiskey for breakfast, doing all manner of hard drugs, and hanging out with dangerous company. His life would have killed most of us long before cicumstances took him.

Yup!
I never actually talked to the guy, but he was definitely fried! A burnout to the extreme.

I remember one time seeing him in a bar mumbling to himself about football while writing on a scrap of paper (maybe a bar napkin).
In 2001, while working on the house next door to his, the other workers told me told stay alert because that crazy dude could/would just start shooting at any moment.

Dang it the more I learn about Hunter the more it seems like home. Me and my late brother would shoot various calibers while sitting at kitchen table out the sliding glass doors, particular one unlucky cedar tree - which finally died shorty after Dale did. I saw the restricted ammo days a couple decades ago so have more than life time supply to get out my system when ever the mood or need strikes. Gun control means not hitting anything you do not intend to so Hunter antics way safer to be around than random hits on cyclers. Too bad yoose more sane and stable civilized dudes may miss out on loud mood punctuation marks-manship. Gotta keep in mind Hunter made his mark by ratting out the scum of this planet sending troops to death for banksters fun and profit. My father broke back and bank of several corrupt govt and mafia scams in Miami and Florida to point we lived in seasons at a time like the movies with 24/7 marked and unmarked police and cars parked around home and taking me to school and out shopping etc. After I saw how politics worked from the inside as a child I never registered to vote knowing if it mattered it would be illegal.

Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang...

The night before his death, Hunter told a friend:
"They're gonna make it look like suicide"
"I know how those bastards think."

The fact of his living this this long this way debunks assorted myths associated with such activities; IE it's not what you do, it's what/who you are. Or choose to be.

These days, the easy choice is heroin, which kills kids indiscriminately... Sad but true. Their families, schoolmates, and communities are left holding the proverbial bag after the overdoses. These children don't have enough experience, in life, or with drugs to comprehend the consequences of their actions, or to deal with the heavy stuff they ingest thru whatever means. Then again, these are kids who grew up on prescribed cocktails of mood stabilsers and enhancers, in order that the system which struggles to contain or control them can bend them to fit the broken mold. This same system has brought heroin to their doorsteps via its misguided War.

The good doctor was merely ingesting likker, pills, psychedelics, & pot.
His legacy is what it is.
What's yours?

I have three beautiful daughters, two in college, one already educated with 2 children of her own and about to re-marry, another engaged and working part-time and none of which have ever had anything to do with drugs. The youngest one (21) won't even sample alcohol.

And while some of Thompson's writings may be entertaining, his personal life was in no way admirable. What you can get away with isn't necessarily what you should do. In the end, he didn't get away with anything. However he died, it's a dead-nuts cinch it was never going to be of old age. If his demise, regardless if by suicide or murder wasn't the consequence of his own actions, what the hell was it?
