I'm restoring a '74 MkIIA with 28k on the clock. I just finished posting about how to determine if the main bearings need replacing, when it occured to me that there's no info i can find on how to determine when the cam bushes need replacing. Any info out there from the veterans?

Some books will tell you to look for excessive play - what the hell is that? perhaps something over 0.010" ?

Cam bushes usually last a very very long time. New bushes need to be line bored so replacement if done correctly can be expensive.

Ah, yes, "excessive play." I suppose if my bushes are not constantly running around in the garden chasing balls and butterflies, they're likely OK.

I'm not going to worry about the bushes and just leave the old ones in. Same with my main bearings. Thanks for the info, cash.

Huffer
In the Technical Data section of the Workshop Manual the Cam shaft Bearing Journal Dia. Is 0.8735” for Standard and Combat 750's. I Believe its the same for the 850's.
Camshaft Bushes Fitted I.D. Left and Right is 0.8750".... just a 0.0015" fit. Just be aware what cam you are running.... Scrolled or if its a combat cam they came Un-scrolled. This determines which cam bushes to get. And yes these need to be machined after you install them. OldBrits have good info on Cam bushes so check it out.
