How do I take apart the alternator light on a Mark III?

I have the five spade connector solid state assimilator. Checking the wiring in the dash, there is continuity on the left side of the double white wire to the neutral light. The green neutral light works. There is no continuity on the right side of the white wire to the red alternator light. How do I take the red alternator light assembly apart without breaking something? I want to check for corrosion, broken wires and burned out lightbulb

Both neutral and charge warning lights are normally fed from ignition switch terminal 2, so power should be reaching the charge warning lamp (from W on T2) if the neutral lamp has power, therefore, grounding the other charge warning bulb terminal (WN wire) should light the charge lamp?

Probably with some difficulty.
The ears of the sheet metal retaining clip need to be pried back to release the light from the console at which point the ears of the clip may break off as it will probably be corroded so I suggest you don't attempt this unless the bulb is likely to be blown.

The actual bulb holder with the spade tabs is retained by two lugs that snap into sockets in the body. I don't have an original bulb holder (only a modified one from a different warning light that has a capless wedge bulb) to show at the moment only the body.

If an LED is fitted as a direction indicator/blinker (Amber) warning bulb then either a 'Tweaker' needs to be fitted (or two diodes) and the LED wired to ground.
"If you fit a LED bulb in place of a std. warning light bulb it will only work on one side, left or right not both. You need a Tweaker."

I managed to get the light out without breaking anything. How do add a photo I have saved to my computer?

Ok, so the bulb probably is blown.

Parts are on order! Hopefully more progress when they show up. Meanwhile, fixing primary case leak.

Got the light. Managed to get the old light out of the red holder without breaking anything. The old light looks like a pre-1975 part. Have no idea how it got in there. Tested the new light, I have continuity. Decided reassembly should be done when I am not tired and locked up the workshop.

I can't figure out what is leaking on the primary case. It isn't the seam on the cover with the gasket.

Assuming the case isn't cracked then the most likely areas of leakage are numbered 1 - 5 not in any particular order.
1, Alternator wire grommet.
2, 06-6257 Inner chaincase steady stud hole (as there's no oil seal).
3, Cross-shaft oil seal.
4, 06-4727 Welch plug (missing?).
5, Mainshaft seal.

The mainshaft {#5} often leak as transmission is often not centered in the seal, wearing it uneven. I don;t know how the factory did it but I made a little jig . ID the size of the shaft, OD the size of the seal hole holding the shaft centered as I tighten the treansmission mounts.

This is great information - thank you (I bet it's the alternator wire grommet, as I recently replaced the alternator)
