High Bar Conversion

After suffering with a hip injury I decided to make life a bit easier and covert my Dominator to high bars. I have loosely bolted everything back up to check it all works. Now just waiting on a set of brake/clutch lines to finish off. Hope that 1. They can get to me before we all end up shutting down and 2. That I get a chance to ride it before we all shut down. Please excuse the mess!!!!!

Always liked "straights" as a good mix for comfort and sporty riding, on my 'to do' list for mods. Once run in and ok.

You did remember to put on the top yolk nut ? It looks like it is missing in one of the photos !

Hi No it's still off. I marked it when removing it so will either paint it or order something new. If you also look closely I put one of the mirror brackets on the wrong way round. I will have to cut and re solder the wires again
 
I hope you get to ride your bike a lot this year . I have been out only once in 2020 , just waiting to be a little warmer outside . It will be here soon , according to forecasts .
 
That looks very good - I’ve been contemplating doing the same. Don’t suppose you’ve any advice to share on the process? Type of bars, ease of moving across etc...
Did you drill your original head stock for the risers?
 
Fairly simple process. I was going to have the factory do the work but when they went into receivership I got the bike back. As we were heading to lockdown I ordered all the parts myself and now had the time to do it which I did not before. I got a new yoke from the manufacturers who supplied Norton as I want to be able to take it back to stock if needs be. Stripping and re fitting is a days work but if you are like me and mess up the bleeding (doh! basic error) it will take three as I had to walk away from it twice. I replaced the lines with 150mm longer ones and the throttle cable still fits. I like Rizoma and used their bars, slave cylinders and brackets. I drilled the bars for the bar end indicators and a bit of cutting, soldering and heat shrink did the job. I am not sure of the suppliers of the yoke are able to supply now as they may be back supplying the New Norton owners and under contract. I can certainly give you their details to at least ask. Factory wanted over £1800 and I did it with basic tools (you will need a 37mm socket) for a quarter of that all in.
 
Thanks, I’ll get to it in the next few weeks - good to know the brake line measurements. I think I have the contact already for the yoke and yes, there may be an issue there but we’ll see.
I’m a bit more hopeful that Norton might be soon supplying parts anyway regardless....cheers!

Would the conversion cost more for the Dominator? I had my 961 done and when I originally asked a dealer to quote they came back with around £1800. I ended up getting the factory to do it and it came to just over £900 including 2 hours labour.
 
Yes mainly because they need to supply and fit a new top yoke to accommodate the risers rather then clip ons. The yoke itself was £480 from Norton
 
Forgot to mention my first real ride this year on the bike and certainly after the conversion was last week. 250 miles all in at a gentle pace and so much easier for me to manage. Glad I did the conversion.

That was a while ago wasn’t it & in the realms of acceptable, I think in the last 18 months factory prices have gone up a bit ,£1800 for handlebar conversion is a bit of a touch ,well done anyone getting it soughted for under a grand
 
I’m sure there’s a logical explanation GLB... but in your pics posted above the steering stem nut is missing...
 
Hi Eddie I replied to this on 22nd March when TonyA asked. It was on sooooooo tight I damaged in taking it off!!!!!! I have since filed, sanded and repaired it but still not happy and will be looking for a replacement. Also as I mentioned one of the mirrors brackets is the wrong way round. Also now corrected.

Mine had a new top yoke as well. As you say, it was the major part of the cost.
 
Did you have the fluid cylinders changed as well? They were quoted at over £400 for the two. Rizoma charged £150

No, I think the new parts were top yoke, handlebars and clamps, and a couple of cables. I never got an itemised invoice for anything done at the factory, but the total parts cost was £640 + VAT and the labour was £125 + VAT.
