I have a single Mikuni round slide spider type carb that came on my 850, it haas a LOT of miles on it & since I'm going to be close to Sudco Monday so I thought I would get a few parts to freshen it up a bit. I assume its a VM34 but it's not marked anywhere in any way so how do I identify what size it is? And besides any gaskets what else would be smart to replace? I was going to get a new float needle & seat, new needle & needle jet & was wondering if a new slide would be good.. I'm a novice with Mikunis & will be running a new set a Amals in a while but for now I want this single Mik running as good as it can. Thanks.

How is it running now?

All the internal, jets, needles, slides and such are all stamped and marked. Get these ducks in a row and make a list (hard Copy) of what you have. Check your plugs and evaluate the general operation of your bike. Bring your data (list) and your assessment on how the bike runs with you to Sudco. If needed, make adjustments.

It is just too darn relative with these carbs and your best bet is knowing what you have compared to how your bike runs. What other may or may not have in their bike can serve to throw you off in a bad direction. You already have the best knowledge you need in your grasps.

To determine the size, measure the output side of the carb.

Why not just carry it with you when you go? I'm sure Sudco has knowledgeable techs who can help you get the proper parts and give you some tips as to what needs replacing.

I think the tiny starting carb punger and seal might be most wear prone. Also search up < UFO minuki kit > and not the ventrui plate assecory for extra spunk of increased intake speed. Slide would be the another item to think about but body alloy seems better than Amal so less zinic oixde or beating out and distortions to last a life time+.

danno is right. just take the carb with you, and your own tools to take it apart for them.

sudco will not necessarily have a good idea of exactly what you have-- they will ask cryptic questions to identify your carb, such as "what is the float bowl drain plug made of . . . " it will help to just hand it them.

they will assemble a kit for you out of their parts bins that has everything you need.

I wasn't aware Sudco did ANY retail business. Normally they want you to order everything from one of their authorized dealers.

I'm planning on taking it down and writing down the #'s of what's in it. ( jet sizes etc) I just don't know for sure its a 34 or ??? So if checking the the output side size will tell me that's all I need. SudcoSudco told me if I call ahead they will put a order together for me I can come pick up, maybe they don't normaly do that but since I'll be so close it's a good thing & quick. Thanks.

Well. yes and no.
What will tell you what you need is how the bike runs with what you have now. It won't matter if it is a 36 or a 34. If you need to lean or richen up some where within the range, by determining what you have in the carb now will tell you what you need to get from Sudco.

So, the real question is, is the bike running now and if so, how well does it run with what you have. If all is good, then maybe just replace what you have to tighten/freshen it up. If rich or lean in a curtain area of the range, you have all day tomorrow to determine where you need to make the adjustments.

Jets R Us has the ranges to look at. They have all the part number.
Search around here. http://www.jetsrus.com/carburetor/carb_ ... eries.html

The size of the bore is etched/stamped VERY lightly on the part of the body casting that is machined to accommodate the enrichener, you can, simply, measure the bore.

You may not be aware that Rocky Point Cycle has been supplying Mikuni carb kits for over 25 years, why fight it? RPC has every calibrated part you could want to refresh you carburetor, and 40 + years of carburetor tuning experience to back it up.

Sudco is one of the more knowledgeable Mikuni distributors and is happy to sell to the public, they are not a service organization, as far as I know.

Bill.
