A mate of mine recently bought a Heritage Softail, 09 I think, in the States and shipped it home,
Very happy with his purchase, (under 7,000 miles) saved heaps even after all the changes to meet Aust standards.
It's a 6 speed and is very high geared. Rediculously high geared.
As this is his first bike at the age of 56, and I don't know anything at all about Harleys, he is at the mercy
of the Dealers, who have told him not to use top (6th) gear, under 120 klms (75 mph).... ?
In South Australia, that is 10 klms over the speed limit.......
I haven't ridden it, but he tells me it's a tractor to ride so why the high gearing, does this sound standard.
Can the rear Belt drive be altered to lower the gearing.
Thanks AC.

Most major highways in the US have a 70mph speed limit. That means the average speed by the average driver is ~ 75mph.

75mph with the Harley 6-speed translates into the smoothest engine speed for long drives down the highway.

As long as the engine isn't lugging (does that description work in AU?), there really isn't a minimum speed (IMO).

A big harley, in top gear, is just fine at much lower engine speeds than you would ever think of using on a classic bike. 2000 - 2500 RPM is perfectly acceptable for a sheer torque throttle roll-on to pass slower vehicles.

Yep, thats what I thought,... don't quite get the reason for a six speed g/b.
Are they all 6 speed these days.
Any way I'll tell him to get her in to top and save some juice.
AC.
P.S. I think some of the concern is that he doesn't feel too comfortable on it at much over 100 kph. (60 mph)
Thanks.
