Can anyone tell me the ground clearance on a commando with stock diameter wheels/tires (4.10x19) and one of the Dunstall-type 2 into 1 into 2 pipes?

I would like to put one on my bike but the speed bumps ("Topes") here in Mexico are quite impressive and I tend to believe that one of those pipes would live for maybe two blocks in San Miguel de Allende, where my Commando will live permanently beginning probably in late Jun/early July. Art Bone, a good friend who lives about a 1 minute walk from our house in San Miguel gives that pipe a life expectancy here of "possibly as much as several minutes." I suspect he's right but if I knew the actual ground clearance I could determine if, with great care when negotiating topes, it is possible at all.

I used to ground the one formerly on my bike with startling regularity. It was the worst feature of an otherwise superb system.

Ditto. That and having to remove the center stand.

Thanks guys - sounds truly not workable here and I had forgotten about the need to remove the centerstand which I won't do anyway.

Mine is up on its centerstand so I can't really say. However, if you get the "backpipe" and the headers joined and lined up correctly, you should be able to tuck it up under the engine pretty well. I've seen them caved in, but I've run these for some years and haven't had the pleasure. They're a pain to line up and yes, the stock centerstand won't work. The Dunstall stand is useless for rear wheel maintenance. I haven't figured a way to use the sidestand with it because the centerstand is in the way of the spring. Don't know why I keep it on!! Except nothing else looks and SOUNDS like it.

Mike,
Your are lucky to be living in close proximity to Art, and by all means follow his advise.
That is all that needs to be said.
I run the above refered to exhaust system and the proper stand for same. One has to avoid, at all cost, speed bumps, large boulders and any kerb jumping. You might like the "S" type system as it will eliminate any problems with speed bumps, and with Art near-by he coud advise you with the proper setup .
Foward my best regards to Art please.

I'll do that - He and his wife left yesterday afternoon for France; they'll be visiting Paris for a week or 10 days and then doing some extensive riding in the south. He's renting a bike from some outfit that rents vintage machinery, including old Brittbikes. I can't recall what old britt bike he's renting - all I can remember at the moment is that when he told me I said, "I think I've heard of those!" :)
