Funny, I was also thinking that- you might just get away with it with induction hardening ;

I would like to have an induction heater that was large enough to do the trick. Maybe someday.
I tried a 1.5 KW unit one time but it was too slow to heat the gear without transferring too much heat to the windings.

It's a piece of firebrick that has a steel cup inside of it. The armature is inserted though the hole and rotated with the drill for a specific amount of time in front of the rosebud and then oil quenched. Then it is re-inserted and blue tempered with a propane torch. They come out around 58 RC and have proven to last very well.
