Gearbox

Hi, I'm new to Commando's and I've a Mk 1 850, I noticed oil mist from the 2 bolts at the front of the gearbox that are quite inaccessible but managed to get a spanner on them to nip them up only to find it feels like they're changing the gears upon turning the bolts !!!! what's going on and what's the worst can happen ???

these are not fixing bolts to be tightened till they stop moving. They hold moving parts of the internals. Read up on gearbox overhauls to learn more....

They hold the quadrant and camplate and are supposed to turn as those parts move when changing gear. Those parts run in bushes within the casing and are sealed by O rings. If you only have misting and everything gearbox wise works ok, I would just live with it.

Now you have a Commando, you really should get yourself a manual. Tightening and/or loosening things without knowing what they are could get you in trouble.

If you mean the ones in between the cradle plates then it's simple.
  1. One is the pivot bolt for the cam plate - the actually mechanism for changing gear - so turning this can/will change gear.
  2. The other (upper RH) is the nut on the quadrant that actually turns the cam plate - so will also change gears

Cheers

Just to make things clear and objective , those AN pictures are for the MK3 electric left gear change , not exactly for your MK1 , tho the bolts you mention are the same ..............!!

I have oil seeping out these two bolt holes in my 850 MKII. When I rebuilt the GB following the Hemmings video, he mentions to located those two bushes to leave enough space for the orings. That wasn't too precise and I may not have got them correctly positioned. Even Norman White's restoration book mentions to measure the position prior to replacing the bushes, but doesn't state what it should be.
So is there an ideal position to place them? Any bodges that can improve the fluid tightness without stripping apart GB?
