Greetings everyone. I have three Norton? gearboxes. Can anyone tell what that came out of by the numbers stamped on them?

G102A7735
M5720
315510 W

Any help would be appreciated.

Ron

Do any of them have the forward lower mounting lug like this?

gearbox numbers

As they would be from an AJS or Matchless.

Or "M" could mean it's a Norton 1957-63 gearbox

135510 [Edit 315510] could be 850 Commando? Is there a "circle with two lines" stamped at each end of the number?

I was reading the INOA tech digest last night and it says( page 2-5) " Matchless cases have a M prefix on the external ID marks." So one of the boxes you have might be Matchless.

Thanks L.A.B. The "M" box is just like your photo. I thought the M might be Matchless.

Yes, the 135510 has circles on each end of the number but has three lines in it. Sorry I didn't note this in my original post. The bolt holes line up with an Isolastic swing arm engine/gearbox plate. I thought Commando but didn't know what year. Thanks for that too.

Thanks Doug. I think you're right.

Yes I can't count. There are three lines!

Sorry, you copied my typo-as the number you originally gave was 315510 (W).

Okay, so far I think the M5720 is a Matchless, year unknown. The 315510 W is a 1974 Commando. And I'm still trying to find out the G102A7735. Thanks so far for the help.

Okay, now I think the G102A7735 is a Norton pre 1956 laydown gearbox. Thanks all for the help.

Ron

Gearbox M5720 is from a 1957 Matchless G11. AMC gearboxes for AJS bikes also start with an M . Those for Nortons have the prefix NA. Later AJS/Matchless boxes have the prefix MA.
