Hi. My gearbox is pretty worn. Can I strip the whole gearbox in the frame as I hate taking all the primary off and fancy making it as hard as possible for myself? :D What can't I get at via this approach? Thanks.

Well for starts the mainshaft won't come out. Makes it real hard to change that bearing!

Yes, either gearbox in or gearbox out, primary come off just the same.
Won't the mainshaft come out and the sleeve gear that get left behind? No matter, primary comes off just the same.

I may have just assumed that it was intended that the primary be left intact. I suppose it is possilble to remove the clutch hub and drive sprocket and leave the inner primary. But what's the point of that? I have to admit I was thinking of the mainshaft and sleeve gear as an assembly. I was trying to express with light sarcasm that it is a good idea to take it all the way down. Just my opinion.

Carry on!

You have to remove the inner primary to take the counter sprocket off the sleeve gear to get at the big bearing. Gotta take the primary apart. Not a big deal on any but an 859 MkIII.

Decided not to be a lazy barsteward and I will take the box out and do it properly

Good choice - it's a LOT easier to work on, especially to remove the layshaft bearing, etc.
