just checking what the the proper capacity of the gearbox is on the 1974 850....book says .42 litres or a hair under a US pint..
the book has been wrong in the past, so was just wondering.
thanks,
Eric

That amount is correct as far as I know, but you should find a level plug at the rear (as you sit on the bike) of the outer gearbox cover, roughly level with the kickstart shaft?

With the bike upright, remove the level plug and then fill the box slowly until oil starts to run out of the drain hole.
Alternatively, once you have found the level plug, you can shine a torch/flashlight into the gearbox inspection hole as you add the oil and stop filling when the oil level reaches the level plug. That way you needn't even remove the plug.

duh...

hey LAB.....I can't imagine why I didn't think of looking inside while filing up and using the the drain plug for checking level...a proper fill up without the mess....
thanks,
Eric
