I'm changing the final drive sprocket on my 72 750 and noticed the stub shaft the sprocket mounts to has about .020 - .040" of end play/ slop. As moved in the in/out direction.
I happen to have another gearbox in a parts bike, and it has no slop at all. Should I be worried about this?
I plan on changing out the bearing at some point, but I was hoping I didn't have to do it immediately.

If the shaft moves in and out with the sprocket in place then that probably means the housing is cracked between the sleeve gear bearing and the layshaft bearing. Not immediately terminal but not ideal either.

If the shaft only moves in and out after the sprocket has been removed then it's no big deal. It just means the sleeve gear is no longer a tight fit in the bearing. Jim

thanks!!
it's tight when the sprocket is on.

Wear to the sleeve gear and bearing ID is usually the result of insufficient sprocket mounting torque. A torque wrench here is a good idea. Jim
