Gearbox cradle

I saw a wanted ad from a guy that wanted a post '72 gearbox cradle. My question is " What is the difference to the earlier versions?"
The only thing I have noticed is possibly the adjustment slot for the primary chain is either a bit shorter or in a slightly different position. I notice because I am fitting an RGM belt drive and don't have the proper adjustment available. So I search for a special belt?

1968-70 are not drilled for the oil filter mount or centerstand mount as it is frame mounted on those models. 1971 is drilled for the centerstand but not for the oil filter. 1972-1974 are drilled for both. 1975 is not slotted for gearbox adjustment. There are also differences in the opening for the gearbox in the later models to facilitate removal.
 
Nice info, although it all makes sense as oil filter and center stand change came later. No difference for the adjuster slot from 70-72?
 
My '72 was not drilled for an oil filter. 208xxx VIN
 
I noticed my 1971 cradle has more material where the 850 cradle can crack at the righthand side.
 
Sometime in 1974, probably late, the swing arm spindle was pinned with 2 cotter bolts, versus 1 center bolt. Probably very few, but I managed to find such a cradle on fleabay.
Other than the holes for an oil filter, I don't see much to specify '72-74. MK3 cradle wouldn't work in previous year. No gearbox adjustment for primary.

The Mk 3 bottom crankcase bolt hole went to 3/8" also. Not before time... :rolleyes:

Pretty simple, clamp spindle with aftermarket clamps or buy cradle with cotter pins. You'll have to deal with the issue either way. Plenty of info on this forum about it.
