From my apprenticeship days, you would fettle a casting or forging by removing the flash or rough edges before sending to the next process. (can be used in the pottery industry also). Fettering is to limit the movement of a limb, normally a leg, by applying ankle chains i.e. you would restrict a horses speed by fettering it. Britain and America, two countries separated by a common language.

Also an action verb. On other lists we'd call it "quality fettering time" to urge em on. Basically the term seems to mean "tied down by another task at hand."

JBW has saved my ass many times out on the road or in the shop. I once had my drive chain carve a hole in the bottom of a Santee oil tank on my Triumph Hardtail. I took the oil tank off the bike ,took it into my motel room. Emptied the oil ,cleaned the surface with a nail file. Made a patch out of a doubled over beer can and JBWed it to the "affected area". It worked so well I never had to fix it properly. I use a chain tensioner nowadays to keep it from touching the repaired area.

I guess this thread is officially hijacked.

Nothing dishonorable about JBW and hobot knows this. I have not heard negative comments about the product, only perhaps how it was used in certain situations.

I use it exclusively for threaded insert installations and can think of nothing better for this purpose.

I am a proud user of JBW and I don't care who knows it.

Now, PC7, thats another story. Not really, just for light duty jobs, if there is such a thing.

All ,just wanted to say that due to the extreme cold in my shop I have not tried to remedy my leaking gear box. When the temps come up a bit I'll dive in and report my findings. Thanks to all who have jumped in the discussion.

Yeah too wintery here too to suffer my AMC go though task. I used to put up with upper 30's fixing some nasty issue to get a ride on a winter grace day but not no mo.

Philly:

Your ID would seem to indicate a location near Philadelphia, PA. If so, have you made contact with the Delaware Valley Norton Riders club yet? Could be a great local support for you on this project. Maybe get some experienced eyes on your problem. Big annual ride-in coming up next month too.

I've been going to the DVNR meet for at least the last 14 years usually on a Triumph. One year on my old Triton ,but this year on my Commando. I did join the DVNR group. If I can't get the gearbox to my satisfaction I'm not too proud to seek out help.Thanks.

Philly. Good to hear. Maybe I'll see you there. I sent you a PM with a guess at your identity.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to my own thread.....I took off the inner and outer covers looking for obvious problems. The only thing I did find that I didn't do such a great job removing the "original" inner cover gasket as there was some paper left behind on the gasket land. I cleaned all gasket surfaces installed new gaskets and applied some silicon sealant. I buttoned her all back up .I'll wait a day or two before filling with oil so the sealant can set up. I'll let you know if she now holds her oil.....Skip
