Hello Everyone,

I've torn my G15 Engine (Atlas 750) down 99% and need some help with the last 1%. I successfully split the case - the drive side popped right off. The issue I'm having now is I cannot for the life of me remove the crank from the other half of the case.

First i tried some hits with a wooden block / hammer - no dice. Then I heated the boss of the main bearing through the timing side and held the entire case in my hands as i hit the crank against a wooden block, no movement.

Am i doing something wrong / is there a better way to do this? I'm afraid to put some real force on the crank so i don't damage anything but i really don't know how else I'd do it.

FYI I'm going to be replacing the big end shells and getting the crank balanced regardless.

Hi Oscar - mine was a bugger on that side too but the crank itself came out easily, it was the bearing that was a challenge. Try heat, penetrating oil, cooling the part you want out with an ice cube (hey, works for me). Heat in a BBQ (brazier) to 300F or so, may take a few cycles of heat/cool. If all else fails bring to a good machine shop I suppose. Mine had sat for probably 40 years but thankfully in a garage with a lot of sawdust flying around so I think it sort of helped.

IIRC, My Atlas manual says to hold the timing side case and beat the crank end with a hammer. I know that sounds crude, and if you are not careful, you can damage the crank end where it sljps into the seal.
I am not with my manual now, so I cannot verify.

I do remember so beating on my crank and suffering some damage.

Slick

There is a special tool, basically a closed ended tube that fits over the end of the crank and butts up against the crankshaft. You then hit the end of the tool and that drives the crank out of the bearing. There's no danger to the oil quill on the end of the crank as the force is all delivered directly to the crank.
