I only have one problem with BMWs - how do you change the gearing ? I think one would be really great if fitted with a Zoller type supercharger like George Meier's IOM winning RS500 in 1939. You could paint the supercharger black, and go historic racing.
I really like this, it gives me an adrenalin rush:
1939 IOM TT :
I run a BMW in pre 76 classic racing....stock bottom end...rev limited to 7500....once I sort out the top end probably look at 8500.... wondering why it would need a centre bearing as they are a very solid crank. :?:
The whole airhead range from 500 to 1000 used to have a common crank with different c/weights.
At full noise there is minimal vibration.
As for gearing, I have two final drives depending what track I run, Motor is stock apart from cam and carbs so lots of scope to tweek.
I meant, there is contention in British twin circles about it, BMW have always managed fine with just the two mains, albeit in a smoother running configuration, so, has anyone ever seen a 360` crank BMW H-twin?
BMW do an 800cc parallel twin, if thats what you mean ?
Course, being BMW, it is smooth, powerful and well refined.
Less than 400 lb dry. (And chain drive !).
Where Nortons could have been, with a few decades of research and refinement... ?
There was that discussion here a while back, about a few stray late 850 crankcases gaining that odd solid casting/ bit at the front of the crankcases.
Mount for a balance conrod/arm ?
The poor old Brits in their final NVT/Meriden Triumph days had similar designs that never made production, what was that 'Phoenix'or 'Diana'..stuff ?
& Nevermind the V5 Triumph 'modular' design that Honda liked...quite a bit.
I meant H for horizontal..
Since BM pistons rise and fall together, and fire once every revolution, its hard to describe it as anything other than a 360 degree motor.... ??
Some Porsche engines are considered to be 180° V-engines....
Unless sniffing enough 2 stroke fumes gives it some other interpretation ??
Rohan, mind your tone, I refer you to J.D.s recent reminder ..
The horizontally opposed BMW twins fire the same as a Commando...but being 180`twins compared to 0` as the Commando is, they run a 180`crank...
I asked if anyone had seen one set-up to run a 360` crank, which would be a firing configuration equivalent to the 180` vertical twins.
OK?...
Having both pistons rushing to the same sides of the boat together (=massive vibration !!) would require the designer to be sniffing something with no thought for the outcome.
