Fuel tap

I have a '69 Mercury in which I put a BAP fuel tap. The tank has only the one gas tap hole. In order to fit the tank, the tap must be screwed in so that the on/off lever faces inwards. Needless to say, it is awkward to move the lever on/off. Also this set up does not allow for
main and reserve settings. What tap would have been used OEM on this bike and can someone suggest a source?

FYI original tap on my 1963 Atlas was Ewarts type as below. Now hard to find and pricey if you do.

Fuel tap

Operation is PULL - ON, TWIST, PULL - RESERVE.

You might try various thickness crush washers to get tap to align in desirable position.

It appears that British Cycle is out of stock on this item, so I bought one from SM Motors.
I was going to install it today when I noticed while testing it by blowing through it that it
does not flow at all in the reserve mode. My guess is that the passage was plugged with
solder during assembly. I have contacted this business asking for a remedy and am awaiting
their reply.
