on usability...

I have removed the pistons from the caliper and the seals as well. Cleaned all up for a good look at it's internal condition.

There is a scrape on the wall of the outside piston bore. Not deep, but it is noticable. it sits flush to the wall and the edges do not protude into the inner diameter.
The scrape does not go into the piston seal groove so it looks like brake fluid will not leak around the seal al all.

Since the piston "rides" on the seal and the seal more or less "centers" the piston in the bore, there should be no contact of the piston directly on the bore, and even if it did, the scratch has no "sharp" edge to cut the piston (I am replacing the stock pistons with stainless ones) and the pistons stainless steel is much harder than the calipers aluminum.

Should I worry and trash an otherwise good caliper?

You're probably ok. Piston rides on the seal as you said. It would be interesting to find out what caused the scratch.

Looks like maybe a p.o. tried to remove the piston with some sort of probe.... just a w.a.g.
