I did a "wake up" on this 1992 Yamaha TDM for a good friend who is moving away (same guy that sold me his '98 KLR650). I did the basic tank drain & rinse, carb cleaning, battery swap, and a couple of fuel lines replaced, then took it for it's first ride in about 3 years.

When we got to talking about what all it was going to need to be trusty again, he told me it could be mine "super cheap"

Well, it's mine.

It's kinda like a Commando in that it's a vertical twin 850cc 4-stroke with dry sump, but it's 5 valves per cylinder, DOHC, water cooled and has tall suspension. Sorta like a John Player, too, as it has dual headlights. I like it!

They're kinda rare, only imported in 92 & 93 as an 850.

Europe, UK and Aussie all got its sporty sibling the TRX850. Lovely engines, great bikes, only let down by a cheap front end.
Here's mine (I've put an R1 front end on it):

Great bikes, if a little heavy. A friend of mine has one with very high mileage that is still going strong. He has more exotic bikes, but the TDM seems to be his go-to bike unless he wants to show off.

I was always curious about the TDMs. Looked up the weight, 430ish dry and with 5 gallons, up to 480s wet. Steel perimeter frame. Grandpaul, maybe find a later complete front end with a lighter wheel? And, maybe a rear wheel to go with it? Or . . . . just leave it alone and enjoy it.

Too late, header system on the way (dent n' scratch at $100)

I'm not doing any serious trekking with it, so the stock suspension and running gear will be fine. Just a toy for a while, unless it grows on me. May have to sell the KLR that has gotten all of 20 miles on it since I got it put together. Too many projects, not enough time with 2 kids, suburban brake repairs, and home renovations, etc...
