Putting my forks on my 850 rebuild back together. Does the little cup shaped damper valve have the cup facing up or down? Big diameter at the top, small at the bottom or vice versus? Also does the pin sit inside the cup or below it?

Don't do it !!! :shock: (using just gasket cement) I did that a couple years ago, cause I didn't have the fibre washers on hand. Guess what, I was rewarded with a super slow leak of fork oil on my wheel and tire. :evil: So ... I had to do them again, and I used the proper fibre washers this time. I have NEVER had them leak when assembled with ALL the correct parts. I just got lazy, like your "thinking" of doing htown16. That's why this forum I think yesiree.
Does your local auto parts store have a selection of smaller aluminum or copper crush washers? One technique I learned to keep the external oil line fittings to the heads on my Ducati race bike completely clean and dry was to put a thin layer of blue Locktite on both sides of the banjo bolt crush washers. Did the same with the fork drain screw crush washers.

In a pinch a well stocked hardware store should have the correct size red fiber washers in the plumbing area.
A dab of sealant will help it stick to the damper tube when assembling into the slider.
