Fork oil seals

To day i have changed the oil fork seals.
The seal is not very tight into his slider side.
Maybe leaks from around?

Fork seals should be the steel backed type, which means they are a tight fit into the sliders. If you've got the all plastic type (soft) best to change them for the steel (hard) ones. Or the housing in the slider is too big?!

Glue ? I've ordered in alot of fork seals over the years and all were metal outside cased. Just got lucky I guess. Nice snug fit. Crank primary seals I have seen in rubber over metal outer and would not recommend that type. Tears when installing. Just an asside comment. :idea:

Hi,
The seals are steel around, standard from Andover.
The sliders are 1972 disc.
I push them into the sliders housing with a finger.

Did they slide in far enough for the collar to tighten down? Are they the "leak-proof" variety, or the original #NM17713?

That's what I was thinking...the collar will hold them in so what's the difference?

That's what I was thinking...the collar will hold them in so what's the difference?

If not seated tight into the onto the leg, oil can bypass, feed up through the threads of the collar and drip past the dust cover. Even though they seem to fit snug and are held snugly by the collar, it is good to apply a bit of sealant of choice to help protect this from occuring.
Although metal on metal is what most seem to suggest, unless both surfaces are perfect leaks will happen.

I have recently attained the Moose seals and dust covers. We'll see how they fit later this winter.

I was really just trying to make sure that the seals were inserted far enough for the collars to be tightened down. The threaded part of the slider is going to be loose. If they go in far enough to tighten the collars and are still loose, then something else should be done. Glue as was suggested or a different seal as Ludwig mentions.
