I just finished this bike (pending a few details including tach cable), and will be taking to a regional British / European rallye this weekend, with the intent to sell it. It is a project I've had ongoing for over 3 years, and I need to let it go now that I've got my Combat Commando.

I really appreciate this forum, and it's members, so I'm offering it up (at the last minute, sorry), in case one of y'all want it.

Here's the "poop" and pix:
1970 / 72 NORTON COMMANDO ROADSTER - $7,500.00

Freshly overhauled top end - .040 oversize pistons & rings in re-bored cylinders. Valves lapped, new intake valve seals. All engine covers highly polished, crankcases previously chromed. Single Mikuni carburetor with K&N air filter mounted on “Sonny Angel” manifold. Additional crankcase breather added at rear inside of timing chest for better engine breathing.

CHASSIS – 1972
Freshly powdercoated frame, swingarm, transmission cradle and various other parts. New adjustable Isolastic retrofit on rear engine/tranny mount, standard Isolastic on front. Freshly overhauled forks with new stanchions, seals & bushings, polished legs. Head and Swingarm bearings refurbished. Like-new Hagon rear shocks.

This bike started on the first kick after overhaul and developed good oil pressure in less than ten seconds. It starts, idles, runs, and handles very well. It has minimum oil weepage, and very little exhaust smoke. Acceleration and braking are excellent.

Well, lots of lookers, nobody pulling out thier wallet or checkbook, so I placed it on e-bay today.

Reserve is a GREAT price for this bike, (I'm positive it will sell), "buy it now" price was what I was asking for it at New Ulm and to all of my forum friends.

The bike lacks a few little details that I will finish before it ships - rear brake light switch, horn, low beam switch position is dodgy, and re-set float level to eliminate minor fuel dripping.

I'm riding it regularly to get the run-in miles on it and I'll do the first oil change before it ships out. It's been starting in 1, 2 or 3 kicks max, and sounds fantastic; it pulls REALLY well, although I'm working my way up the rev band gently.

Just for clarification:

The frame that had the number tag matching this engine is on a shelf in my shop, never to be used with the number it had before. It was sadly misused, welded on, chopped a bit, drilled, and tweaked by clamps (I believe y'all have seen the photos). I am not going to stamp it, ever. It will be sold as a basket case with a bunch of engine parts that I have loosely assembled for it.

I purchased the replacement frame from a guy that kept the engine for a bike he's building to possibly race. He didn't have paperwork for it beyond a Bill of Sale, which he also provided me, in our dealings.

I've been down this road several times, and I've never had an issue. I don't buy or sell stolen stuff, the numbers on this frame, and this engine were obtained legitimately, I have the Bill of Sale and old title from the guy that sold me the chopped bike, it just never got transferred to me.

On a bike this old, it's hardly worth the effort. If the eventual buyer wants to pay all the associated costs, I can get it all done, I just don't do it with basket cases (which this was), unless someone is willing to pay for it (they almost NEVER are). Most states' laws regarding old bikes are very easy to comply with, some don't even issue titles on old bikes.

If anyone interested in this bike needs a title, I will provide it for an additional fee to cover my cost of jumping through all the hoops.

I'm lazy, too!

The high bidder from Osterich, Austria, bought the bike at the reserve price of $5,500.00, a very good deal.

Title question

Grandpaul...

Is it possible to register a bike in Texas without a title? I just purchased a '72 Commando project and assumed that I would have to jump through a few hoops to obtain a title, but your comment above makes me wonder if it is necessary.... Is there a title service that you recommend?

Thanks,

Steve
