Finally, Premiers!

So way back when I first built this bikeI had to cut a few corners due to budget. One of those shortcuts was the carbs. I took a decent pair and put new slides and Stay Up floats, plus the other parts. They actually ran pretty good. But could they get better...

Stuff something down the intakes because I tend to drop crap down the wrong places.

I emailed @marshg246 on Friday night. They got here today. Real two day shipping, I guess things are getting back to normal. I had him add on the #19 pilot jets. If you're not at least checking with Greg before buying parts you should. I didn't strip them so hopefully those tales of swarf are in the past. Just fuel lines and air filter to go back on. Had to leave something for me to do tomorrow.

I forgot to ask Greg about choke blanking plugs. I need to remember next time I order something from him.

Replace the cross head screws into Allen head screw.... make getting the float bowls & gantry off so much easier

I actually didn't have any issue with the cross head screws.

And really the hardest part is getting to the manifold bolts.

yes but in situ getting those pesky float bowl screws out can be a pain..... lot easier with an Allen l
key

I would suggest you check the fuel levels in the float bowls. I bought a pair of those carbs earlier this year and found the fuel levels were a bit high, so had to adjust the float tangs a little.

But they are a good investment..... the bike is running very nicely.

Besides, I think they're 2AB screws.. something that Aremicans don't have handy at the hardware store.

I thought Amal was part of the definition of pesky.

Have fun with them. They sure look nice in those pics.

I agree with taking them apart before firing it up, if it's not too late that is.

I used the optimistic approach like you are with a brand spanky new pair of Keihin FCRs, and I had a stuck open float needle on one of them. Ended up taking them back off and apart to find the reason. Wasn't anything obvious in there, but I had flushed them a couple of times before taking them off. You could do the flush thing and see how it goes. I know those Amal flange bolts are a PITA.

Greg opens them up, checks for swarf and sets the floats.

Got mine from Greg last week but took nearly three weeks into Canada. Got hung up at Customs for most of that time.

Got them on bike a week ago. Had issues dialing them in. Did the fuel level checks and one float needed raising. Also had some blockage on one carb at the tiniest hole in throat floor (Pilot By-pass orifice?). Could not get a spray out of it until I poked with very fine wire.
Bike ran ok for one day but problems have returned, weak output, low pilot response one side, cool exhaust that side. I think it need to go back at that orifice again.

For the money I spent on new parts, Lund's service, etc. I could have bought a pair of new carbs like you Dave. But here I am with my original carbs working fine. Pays your money, takes your chances. I hope they work great for you.

All buttoned up. Turned on fuel, no leaks. Might try on Friday to fire her up.

Oops, MichaelB should have said if we talk about it. I'm happy to do it, but I don't want anyone thinking the carbs are not new from the factory. I do not charge for doing it.

So first kick and the new Amal Premiers worked flawlessly. I haven’t put a vacuum gauge on them yet but I’m not sure I’ll need to. Initially the idle was high but the single cable adjuster was had space but then it dawned on my reptile brain that Amal had set the slide adjusters! Once I backed those out it idles perfectly. I have some new turn signals to fit and then it will need to be taken for a ride.
