I have to reface the flats of my tappets on my ES2. Thus to remove the tappet guide blocks which they advise against in the works manual. The works manual says to do this "use a sprocket puller" which is puzzling indeed. Has anyone ever done this job and what's the sequence? Tools needed. It would be a slide hammer job on heated cases maybe held firm between pine boards in a big vice...but nowhere to put the necessary end to get purchase.....

If you are asking about a post '48 engine, heat the case half in an oven to 180C (350-360F) ensuring that the temperature has stabilized. Using a suitable lever under the lip of the guide, they should slide out pretty easily - if they don't increase the preheat up to 200C. NEVER attempt to hammer the follower upwards to move the guide as the under head of these is radiussed and will potentially split/crack the unobtainable cast iron guide.

Thanks very much...I will follow this advice....however I can get new guides copiedin cast iron ( which would have been thr original material and may have to anyway, depending upon measured wear.
