Ever do wheelies on your Commando?

Many years ago I detuned my mates combat for him upon his request
I put a 1mm plate under the barrel and I fitted a single carb
The carb was from a Suzuki t500 a 34mm VM mikuni with a bigger main jet and the pilot air adjusting screw hanging out about 5 turns because it was setup for a twosmoke 🙄🙄🙄🙄
But the upshot was this bike would pop wheelies in first so easily it was ridiculous
There's a steep hill near me and every time I turned off the main road onto the bottom of this hill a blip of the throttle had the front wheel skyward

And yes, of course I've wheeled the commando. Just parked my fat ass near the back of the seat rolling along in first gear and clobber the throttle, up she comes…

I shredded more trans parts than I can count, Luckily at the time I was able to buy many whole gear used gear boxes for parts. But if you damage one severely at today's prices it could take a boat load of money in parts to fix it. That is one reason I gave up power shifting. Too much power and a clutch that really hooks up = MT pockets. At least 4 or so of my customers damaged gearboxes too and they cried the Broken Gear Box blues in the key of a C note.

Maybe it had an outrigger bearing.
I'm just dumb enough to challenge the physics and have pulled multiple wheelies, twice with bad, walk home endings..
Now a days I'm happy to arrive home with it running and ALL the pieces still attached. That's a win for me.

I built this special for sale as one of my early "Born Again Bikes" customs. I've owned a bunch of Commandos, but this was the only one that ever wheelied on brisk throttle opening in 2nd gear, without "popping the clutch".

850 with JE pistons & gapless rings, Surflex clutch plates with optimized stack, straight-thru mufflers, early Amal Premiers, jetted on the rich side, Sparx electronic ignition.

Sure was a nice bike...

I never really tried to wheelie any of the others, mostly because I couldn't afford for them to get damaged.
 
My parents offered me a brand new car if I did not buy a motorbike .
I turned about and thought about the big offer , turned around again to them and said " I want a Motorbike . " Never popped a wheelie in my life .
 
My parents let us buy go karts and motorcycles and had not one concern about our safety. I doubt they even thought about it. We were somewhat on our own early and developed a built in sense of having to take care of ourselves. A life without ever a wheelie? They are fun!
