Yep; as much as practical, cutting, grinding, blasting happens outside.

I admit, however, to the occasional use of a long mill file or a large flat whetstone to identify and subdue high spots, taking care to avoid knocking down the outside edges.
 
Yes sir Brit Iron mechanics have made me aware not to use steel Brillo pads or abrasives to embed in soft Al and to beware even wire brushes d/t bristle getting lose. I'm a file and razor blade to finger nail guy now. i like cleaning up Hylomar better than anything else as basically just rubs off. Worse are the old fashioned stuff that turns hard as road tar.
