"It's now conceivable, says BusinessWeek's Ed Wallace, that the myth of ethanol as the salvation for America's energy problem is coming to an end. Curiously, the alternative fuel may be done in by an unlikely collection of foes. Fervidly pro-ethanol in the last decade of his political career, former VP Al Gore reversed course in late November and apologized for supporting ethanol, which apparently was more about ingratiating himself to farmers. A week later, Energy Secretary Steven Chu piled on, saying: 'The future of transportation fuels shouldn't involve ethanol.' And in December, a group of small-engine manufacturers, automakers, and boat manufacturers filed suit in the US Court of Appeals to vacate the EPA's October ruling that using a 15% blend of ethanol in fuel supplies would not harm 2007 and newer vehicles. Despite all of this, the newly-elected Congress has extended the 45 cent-per-gallon ethanol blending tax credit that was due to expire, a move that is expected to reduce revenue by $6.25 billion in 2011. 'The ethanol insanity,' longtime-critic Wallace laments, 'will continue until so many cars and motors are damaged by this fuel additive that the public outcry can no longer be ignored.'"

Ya, but knowing the US government if they get involved they will introduce something worse than ethanol. We don't seem to get much of anything right in this country anymore unless it is a direct result of helping the rich get richer and then us average citizensk suffer the consequenses of even those endeavours.

I miss deeply breathing in the fumes from an old ethyl gas pump and smelling all that wonderful lead...

I love it when a political figure comes out and addmits that they lied & manipulated us for some agenda but wants us to belive it's all over now, honest Abe from now on...

THe best my bikesever ran and smelled, is when I got a deal on 110 race gas. Wow what a difference.

I have just realized the driping gas from my 1972 Mercedes is coming from a seal in the fuel pump where the electrical connectors go through. I wouldn't be at all supprized to find out this E-gas crap is eating up all the seals in the fuel injection systems of both my old cars. I have another car ( 72 Volvo 1800 ES ) that has the same Bosch D Jet system. I hate this gas and looked at the web site links from the pure gas . Org site to let Mrs. Jackson know!! Thank you mglemans for posting that link.

Corn is now at $7.00 a bushel, it was at $3.00 last year. That not only hits you at the pump but the dinner table, the price of a beef taco just doubled, and we want to require more ethonal in our gas  doesn't make any sense to me.

As long as Iowa is one of the first presidential primaries then the movers and shakers in that state are going to get campaign promises to make them happy. They would be the corn producers. Iowa actually has a caucus system but the effect is the same. Corn is King in Iowa. Any presidential hopeful that tanks in Iowa has basically had it.

Here is a reality, there is no way that the 10 or 15% ethanol posted content is real in fact if you pay close attention the small print says UP to whatever posted % .The oil companies post this in order to get environmental tax breaks, in my experience the best at most times is around 1 to 5% , however , if the refinery ( gasoline) is close to a scource that percentage may be slightly higher. I was a trucker for Bp and Sun oil for many years and they could never buy enough ,even importing it from south America, and as you say now that the price is so high the likely hood of anything over 5% is very slim, in my opinion it will die a slow death so the political impact will be less.I delivered from an area where there were 3 refineries that served a 400 mile radius each one shipping app.2.5 million gallons per day , 52.5 million a week at 10% that equates to a shipload of corn liquorfor a small part of the country . I dont know what the total output of corn liqour in Iowa is but I'll bet it is nowhere near the demand of 1 state.
That difference of smell of gasoline that you notice today as opposed to yesteryear is bcause of additives to boost octane because of the use of cheap crude and the omission of tetrathyl (lead) one of these additives is Butane which is not very kind to most types of rubber.

Ethanol reduces MPG, and its production serves to increase the cost of staple foodstuffs, low concentrations such as 10-15%, have benefits to environment which are only likely to be recognizable to politicians! A replacement for ethanol is already being tested, and the good news for owners of older bikes is that this doesnt have any of the major negative effects of ethanol in fuel.
